Alabama has >>>>>> more talent than the rest of the SEC...... (Number 1 or 2 ranked class every year). So if he was a good GAME DAY coach, he should never lose...

Clearly Alabama had more talent than Auburn, we had a DB playing QB, he had a 5th year senior who almost won the heisman.

The difference MalZahn >>> GameDay Coach than Saban

Admittedly though, being dominant in 2 phases of coaching and very good in the third aint bad.

I also just realized the 3 teams I didn't include we're a national runner-up, and 2 Sugar Bowl opponents. So unless I'm wrong, which I don't believe I am, Nick Saban has only lost once in the last 6 years to a team who didn't finish in the top ten and that was at one of the two hardest places to play college football in Columbia, SC.

2008 - lost to #1 UF and #2 Utah
2010 - lost to #8 LSU, #22 USC, #1 AU
2011 - lost to #2 LSU
2012 - lost to #11 Texas A&M
2013 - lost to #2 AU and #6 Oklahoma

So not one loss to these lesser teams the OP has suggested since 2008.

So what do you think, best or not? I think going on record I don't blame anyone for saying he's the best.

That said, if I woke up tomorrow and someone gave me an all-star college team and we had to win a game in 7 days, I'm not sure if I'd go with Saban or not.

A&M finished the season 5th. So that leaves 6 top 5 teams, one team ranked 6th, another 8th, and then at Williams-Brice. Not bad I guess.

Malzahn is clearly a better game day coach.

Other than that, I can't think of anyone.

Look at the LSU-Alabama game last year. 17-17 midway through the 3rd quarter and Saban starts pounding the ball up the middle of LSU's defense - the weakest part of the team at that time. It was a simple, yet brutal decision and like Grant destroying Lee's army in the Civil War, he won the battle of attrition and ended up pulling away at the end.

If you would have asked this question after the 2011 regular season game between LSU and Alabama, I would have said that Miles was a better gameday coach than Saban. Now, I put Saban ahead.

Malzahn is still above him though. I give Malzahn credit for the 2010 season for Auburn, btw - as pretty much everyone should. It is obvious who was really coaching that team.

If Malzahn can continue to recruit as he has, Auburn will overtake Alabama and Saban's frustration will grow.

The fact that he hired Lane Kiffin is going to be a problem - and it will show up on game day. It was a bad decision.

Post of the year, man. So, elite teams, if they do lose, it's always because of coaching, right? Never because one of those top ranked players...even a Heisman trophy winner...fumbles or drops a pass or misses a FG, right? That is what you're saying...correct?

That's retarded. You can call all the right plays in the world(which he wont because he is human), but if your players don't execute properly(and they wont every time because they are human), then its beyond your control at times.

He is mediocre on game day. He doesn't adjust well. Fortunately for him, he recruits the best players and has a very good process in place, so he rarely needs to make the proper in game adjustments to win.

Eta: mediocre in comparison to his other strengths and other elite coaches

I have never understood the perspective that Saban wasn't a good game day coach. I think you could argue that CSS has coached himself out of a bunch of games over the last 25 years. Saban is a great game day coach, if for no other reason than his ability to keep a team focused.

Saban took flack for last years iron bowl, but why? When he went for it on 4th down he was saying to his team go win the game and they didn't. When he kicked the field goal anyone with a kicker who could have made it would have tried it. Saban is fine.

Really?

Outside of the 6 losses in his first year, what teams with less talent did he lose to?

2010 - Losses to #19 SCar, #10 LSU #2 Auburn

2011 - Loss to #2 LSU

2012 - Loss to #15 TAMU

2013 - Losses TO #4 Auburn, Loss to #11 Oklahoma

I'll give you SCar and TAMU. The other losses were to teams with equal to better talent as far as Bama. Other teams do recruit ya kmow

I'm not the one that said that.

But he does have a point, sort of. USCe, A&M, AU, and OU all had less talent than Bama. Not to say they didn't have a LOT of talent. But they definitely had less than Bama.

OP is either trolling or drunk, but I'll bite... NO ONE and I mean NO ONE wins them all!!! That's just ridiculous and unrealistic!! No CNS isn't the best game day coach BUT he is a GREAT game day coach and will go down as one of the GOAT!! What the man has done over the last 9 years is nothing short of incredible!!

Appreciate what he has done because after when he finally retires, we may not see anything or anyone like him for a ling time..

Auburn fans believe Malzahn will surpass Saban's success before he is done. Who knows they may be right.

Spurrier, Gus, Sumlin, Mullens are all in a category above Saban.

Saban is probably in a middle tier with your average gameday coaches IMO.
