When did it become a thing to brag about "division titles"?

Growing up, I remember wishing and dreaming the Georgia Bulldogs would win an SEC title (born in 85, so I was waiting for a long time). In 2002, when we won it, I was ecstatic. I was also unbelievably happy when we won it in 2005; however, I was NOT happy when we lost it in 2011 and 2012.

So when did it become acceptable to celebrate division championships? Is this a result of the West winning 6 SEC championships in a row? Since the East hasn't won a title in what feels like forever, the teams have to find something else to brag about?

The first time I ever heard of someone celebrating a division championship was after SCar's appearance in the game 2010. When someone on this board posted a picture of USC's "East Division Champions" banner in their stadium, I was dumbfounded. Why would anybody want to celebrate losing a game?

I'm not proud of it. I hate we have a banner for it, and they even made rings I think.

Whatever.

I probably should have added more after the "USC banner" comment. After posting it an re-reading, it sounds like I am singling out USC, when that wasn't my intention. I have seen numerous SEC East teams bragging about the division title thing, and every time I just

Why do people get their panties in such a bundle over fans of a team celebrating success for their team which includes winning their division? Especially if it's one that doesn't exactly come by division titles all that often?

I don't have a problem with USC doing it. You've been in the conference since 1992 and that was the first time you went to the SECCG. Be proud of it.

You brag about divionsal titles when you don't win conference titles or national titles.

Just look at Missouri fans.

I wouldn't say my panties are in a bunch over this. Just wondering when it became "acceptable" to the crowd to do so. I don't recall it ever happening in my younger years, so why is it happening now?

Is there simply more parity in the Eastern division now than there was in the past, resulting in more teams making it to Atlanta?

Mizzou celebrates it because we were told we wouldn't ever break .500 in the SEC.

In the Big 12 no one cared about winning the division.

If you don't even make it to the conference championship game then why would you hang a banner?

When you were younger, only 3 or 4 teams were making it to Atlanta. Hell, in the 90's, Alabama and Florida accounted for more than 50% of the appearances.

I remember Florida fans and Tennessee fans bragging about winning the East several years ago when it was pretty formidable. Most teams put up signs/banners in their stadium when they win their division.

Fans are gonna brag about anything that bolsters their team's reputation. Especially on a message board. As much as you don't get why they do it, I don't get why it bothers people so much what an opposing fan wants to brag about.

All I know is it became fashionable for one team in specific to celebrate a co-divisional championship circa 2003. Fun fact, that team lost to Memphis and Texas Tech. It was like an amalgamation of this year's Arkansas and Ole Miss teams.

It's funny you bring that up, because I have not heard West teams brag about Division titles (the years the West team didn't win Conference title). Can't say I've ever heard an Arkansas fan bring up 2006 with their chest puffed out.

It all started in 2003, a certain school celebrated it without even going to the sec championship
