It's really not. I support LSU the school, which extends to it's athletic arm, I don't root for LSU the football team.

With pro sports you're just rooting for the team.

I would argue that sidewalk fans make the SEC what it is. Years ago there were little to no pro sports in the South so people pulled for teams due to regional/state pride. That's why college football is a religion in the South. People up north are all about NFL and baseball.

My problem is when sidewalk and bandwagon merge. If you live and die by a school's TEAM you didn't go to its not that big of a deal. Just the frickers who jump ship at the slightest sight of danger

Some of us had parents who could barely pay there bills and we couldn't just leave them hanging and run off to college.

You went to the school - you did not play on the team. Anyone can identify with and cheer for who they want. I support the colleges my kids go to. Some fans are just trash and it is just a coincidence they didn't go to the school.

See, there's a big difference between sidewalk fans and bandwagon fans. I think people here confuse the two.

No one ever cares about sidewalk fans from Miss State b/c they KNOW they aren't bandwagon fans (no offense).

Non taken! I have said the same thing myself multiple times. Good point too, sidewalk and bandwagon is the distinction that is the dividing point.

No problem at all - even for smack talk I think it's perfectly normal and even expected for alums and non-alums to be able to trade some friendly game-time smack talk.

Academics are a different story. Don't talk trash about academics at my school (auburn is just a dumb cow college/agricultural school ha ha ha) and tout the school you're a fan of if you didn't even go there. Sadly, I've seen this before IRL and on the rant.

I agree for the most part. I generally tend to leave academics out. shite like "agricultural school" doesn't bother me (when people refer to Michigan State, my school), but if it's shite like "your degree from ________" might get you a job at McDonald's" (I realize that is exaggerating it), then I get pissed. If that person went to a better school than the one he is bashing, it'd be different, but still something I don't care for.

even if you "graduate" 5000 people per year and they all attend every game, it would take 15 to 20 years to fill most of our stadiums.

I was an Auburn fan from the time I was born- I later graduated from Auburn, but anybody who supports us is welcome as far as I am concerned.

I recently became a falcons fan. I enjoy the atmosphere and go to games with my son. I never lived in Atlanta so I guess I am a sidewalk Falcon, Laker, etc

I don't see much issue with it. Sometimes a person doesn't attend their favorite school due to money matters. Sometimes a person's major wasn't offered at that school. But it does irk me somewhat when a team's fanbase is overwhelmingly sidewalk alumni. And I don't think their connection is as meaningful.

You stand in the back of Econ classes and clap at the test scores? If LSU has no athletics do you support them in the same way?
