Kirby's in a difficult place in his career. When Saban leaves he's got the Alabama job. But Saban may coach another 6 or 7 years -and Kirby's not getting any younger.
Kirby may not be head coach material - he's never been a head coach so no one knows - but he'll get his chance and he'll get it soon. I think he'll leave for an SEC job soon and eventually end up at Georgia if he's any good as a HC.

Muschamp has failed miserably, Smart hasn't yet.

Not a chance. Alabama will go out and try to find a proven head coach again. Given where Saban will likely leave the program Alabama will have their pick of whoever they want. It would be stupid as hell to roll the dice on Kirby. You take a chance on a good coordinator when that's the best you can get.
