I vaguely remember him getting into some controversy, but surely it wasn't bad enough to keep him away from TV for life, was it?

Think he made a "sexist" comment toward a sideline reporter.
I miss the days of him, Gottfried and "down to you Dr. Jerry Punch.

He's lived in Rollingwood above Lady Bird Lake (Colorado River) in Austin for nearly 25 years.
Wish the Longhorns would bring him back to call some radio broadcasts (he did that before he went to ESPN).

He is living the good life in the Hill Country near Austin. He called ESPN sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards an A hole. Since that was not politically correct ESPN canned him.
Edwards who was rumored to of had a "relationship" with Ranger Junior College basketball coach Billy Gillespie (he also coached at Texas A&M and some other school in the SEC). She also was once married to a jockey. She is now married to Oklahoma State Defensive Coordinator Glenn Spencer.
Franklin needs to be back in college athletics broadcasting.
Edwards needs to get over it.

Ron Franklin has one of those quintessential voices that just screams "SEC SATURDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL DAMMIT"

Franklin was one of the first casualties of the PC culture that has killed ESPN. ESPN ended up having to pay the man, but we'll never hear his voice again.
He is one of the best ever. His voice was synonymous with Saturday night in the SEC.
The two incidents:
On October 1, 2005, according to the Chicago Tribune, during a game between Notre Dame and Purdue that Franklin was calling, sideline reporter Holly Rowe praised Purdue defensive coordinator Brock Spack for using all three timeouts on defense despite trailing by four touchdowns late in the game. "If the coaches are giving up," Rowe added, "what does that say to the players?" Franklin responded: "Holly, it's not giving up. It's 49–21, sweetheart."
In response to that, Mo Davenport, senior coordinating producer for college football said, "It was an inappropriate comment, and we've communicated that to Ron. There's never a reason to say something so mean-spirited. Ron apologized. We dealt with it internally."
During a production meeting prior to ESPN's telecast of the Chick-fil-A Bowl on December 31, 2010, Franklin addressed sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards in a condescending tone as "sweet baby"; when she objected, Franklin called her an "a-hole". The incident was reported to ESPN by another colleague, and ESPN tried to pull Franklin from the Chick Fil-A coverage that night but was unable; instead, Franklin was removed from ESPN Radio's coverage of the 2011 Fiesta Bowl the following day.
Franklin apologized for his remarks the following Monday and said he deserved to be pulled from the Fiesta Bowl. However, ESPN fired Franklin the following day; in a statement, ESPN noted, "Based on what occurred last Friday, we have ended our relationship with him."

Call me sexist or whatever, I really DGAF...
But the female sideline reporters don't really add anything to the broadcast, most are not very knowledgeable about the game. And that's what bothers me about them. They aren't hired for what they can contribute to game analysis, they are mainly hired as 'eye candy'.
And I certainly don't enjoy a female voice doing color or play by play.
Flame away.

His Texas homerism was on full display when the Reed Arena crowd confused P.J. Tucker so much in the 2006 game that he dribbled out the shot clock with the game tied.
"HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW, TUCKER??!! HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW?!!"

Janaene Edwards is a far less attractive and scrawnier version of Sarah Palin.

I agree they don't add much except eye candy, but it's because men seem to think that's all they can do. I enjoy Holly Rowe she's smarter than those model types anyway.

Male or Female sideline reporters add anything to the game. 50% of the commentators do not add anything to the game.

"Heavy" Holly was not upset by being called "sweetheart". She was upset because Ron Franklin ate all of the donuts.
