I don't know man. I know A&M is a huge school and has a bunch of loyal alum.. but a 20k jump off the back of Manziel's success seems like a lot.
It wasn't off Manziel's back.
The stadium had to be expanded in part due to SEC visitor section allotment rules. That either meant getting rid of season ticket holders or students. Neither were those good options for obvious reasons.
No construction was going to be allowed without bringing the entirety up to code with meant a ton of construction and money for just a minor bump.
We're just now hitting our stride in alumni numbers so the long term decision was made to raise capacity at the same time since it all needed to be redone anyway. Borrowing money right now is "cheap" might as well get it done.
In the short term shite games probably won't be full, but in 10 years? Unless there's a dramatic shift in fandom it shouldn't be a problem.

Corrections...There were only 62,000 attending Virginia Tech's FCS game, and it was played on Saturday

I think you're being optimistic. We're in the midst of a shift in fandom overall. With every game being on TV and the advancement of HDTV, more and more fans are skipping the lesser games each passing year. Not to even mention the price on tickets going up. Throw in the price of parking, and people just don't want to spend $500+ to take their family of 4 to watch East Popcorn State.
And I haven't really seen many schools getting out in front of this problem. Probably because a lot of them don't have to with the PSL type season ticket arrangements. They get their money regardless whether people show up or not, so they don't really care.

I agree. To be fair, admittedly an unusual position here, college football attendance is down across the country. Fan loyalty is nothing like it used to be, anywhere, as there are too many "excuses" nowadays to either not show up or leave early. Even god at bama has begged his fans not to leave early.

That was tickets sold. They never fill up but claim it was a packed house.

That was more directed at the students, which is a whole other issue. There will likely be some empty seats in the Bama student section Saturday. When you're counting on your alumni to buy season tickets, and your current students can't even use a $5 ticket when most live within walking distance of the stadium, that's a long term problem. Especially when a lot of them are graduating with growing student loan burdens.
I think it was UGA that implemented a young alumni season ticket package. I don't see Bama doing that as the athletic department has long crapped on its alumni.

Question, if 100K go to an LSU game do they only get credit for 50K when half of them leave before the 4th quarter?

More than some. I hope there are huge, gaping empty sections all over the stadium.
It is absolutely disgraceful for a program of Alabama's stature to be buying wins like that.
