He grew up in Gainesville, graduated from Gainesville Hig School (my HS alma matre) in 1968. His albums and videos featured many historical photos and 16mm movie segments taken of Gainesville decades ago. He grew up a gator fan and always acknowledged it...which is easy to prove in the days of google.

What is disgusting is continued behavior of LSU fans trying to justify the ugly actions by their freaking band. I guess they think denigrating the Petty tribute would somehow excuse that Stanford-band type disruption staged in the Florida stadium.

Maybe LSU fans should STFU about it. You are only making the school and State look worse.

Yeah. I saw a Video Bio on Petty about 5 years ago. It was made about the time his wife was divorcing him (c2001) and he made a reference several times to the Gators and being a fan.

I can guarantee Tom Petty had more of a connection with the University of Florida than you do with Texas A&M.

Not sure why this keeps coming up, the Gainesville connection has never been a secret.

Something is fishy as frick with this statement. I was at a Tom Petty and Heartbreaker concert many years ago at the Summit. I remember him saying that Houston was his favorite city in the world. Never mentioned Gainesville once.

A friend of mine saw him play in Pittsburgh. He said Pittsburgh was also his favorite city in the world. Never mentioned Gainesville.

Something not adding up. You Gatahs are grabbing onto someone who really had nothing to do with you. Now if John Deere or Weedeater wanted to latch onto him... they got me and I couldn't argue.

F LSU and their fans for the disrespect.

The tribute was awesome. Best part of the last weekend and makes me hate UF and that garbage stadium just a little less.

Kenny Chesney loves Houston also. Seen him a few times. You know... come to think of it... just about every entertainer I have seen in Houston say they love Houston.

Clearly Houston is special.

Yea. Florida is known for its terrible academics. Coming from anyone but Vandy, that is hilarious. Our degree > your degree.

He was a fan btw. Mentioned it many times, and his guitarist even had a Gator logo on his guitar. So yes. He was a fan.

He cut the grass one time and didn't bump into an oak tree.

Ive been to Houston twice now. Once for business once for pleasure. It's the worst of the "big cities". Just a big, spaced out, generic concrete jungle.

No one said it was favorite place in the world. It's his hometown. For whatever reason, Gainesville was putting out some pretty influential artists at the time.

Here's a video of Don Felder talking about Gainesville producing HOF inductees and giving Petty lessons:

Clearly the entertainment world loves Houston. Not sure what to tell you.

Go back to San Fran and stay out of Houston. Both cities will be happier.
