Tennessee was #7 in KenPom last year. A Sweet 16 type team was there. It didn't take some magical coaching job. He inherited a program that had made 6 NCAA Tourneys in a row and promptly missed the tourney his first two years and nearly did so again in year 3 despite having 2 NBA Draftees on his roster every year + Maymon and Richardson.

Coaching last year's team to an 11 seed was horrendous coaching.

Pearl's last year and Martin's first had identical records. Pearl went 8-8 in SEC and made the tournament while Martin went 10-6 and didn't. LINK

Pretty common for a first year coach to drop off slightly... Especially with a previous coaches' players. Some don't buy into your game planning and strategy.

But I guess that is off your radar.

Pearl did a terrible job his final season, you will not find many Tennessee fans who will argue that. Easily the worst coaching job of his career.

If you think Cuonzo did a good job at Tennessee when considering the talent he had, then my guess is we have different standards and that is fine.

Not me. I always felt Cuonzo was an empty track suit.

Tyndall is a helluva coach, IMO.

I don't think Cuonzo was as horrendous as some of us like to believe, but Tyndall is undeniably better. Cuonzo would spend the first 3/4 of the year underachieving and putting us solidly away from NCAA tourney discussion, then would end the year on a run to make it close. He wasn't awful, but wasn't that good either. Tyndall is working with a very shallow and inexperienced roster (worse than any of CM's) and we are 11-5, 3-1 in the SEC with two nice wins, (Butler and Arky) no very bad losses, and we are 7-1 in our last 8 games. CM would probably be 8-8 or 9-7 right now. With an RPI of 54, we still have a chance to make the tourney if we can somehow find a way to maintain the energy we currently have.

Dude. Mizzou equals meth. Pot isn't even that strong to cause such hallucinations.

Martin had the 2nd or 3rd most talented team in the SEC last year. Vols were a preseason top 25 team.
We had Stokes, Maymon, McRae, Antonio Barton, and Josh Richrdson.

UT should have been a 5 seed or better on paper. Instead, we were lucky to get the play-in game and beat a bad Iowa team. Then got lucky that Mercer beat Duke.
Cuonzo's teams consistently underachieved and lost to teams they had no business losing to. His recruiting was also garbage.

To suggest UT never gave him a chance is absurd. He's a below average coach and does less with more. He's doing the same thing at Cal. They actually have a talented roster and he's destroying their season.

Tyndall, on the other hand, has proven he's a winner. He's given Morehead St and Southern Miss their best years in program history. What he is doing at UT is miraculous if you knew anything about our team. We have one good player and he has to play out of position. Our starting center is a 6-7 small forward with no offensive skill and our power forward is a 6'4 former shooting guard. He just won't SEC POW, btw.
This roster is perhaps the worst in UT history when you really look at it. We have no PG, no post players, and no player who can shoot the 3 with any consistency.
If Cuonzo was our coach with this roster, Vols would be lucky to win 5 games, and that is being generous.

It's almost like his impending firing was hanging over his head...

To be fair, I was wrong about Martin. But yeah, if we don't have to fire Tyndall, we upgraded.

No doubt, and I don't know what he inherited at Cal but he's shitting the bed once again.

Donnie's got that natural rhythm that Gonzo never showed.
