Why on earth are UGA and Vol fans so darn apathetic to baseball when the rest of the SEC is not?

Also, how on earth can UGA suck so bad at baseball when they're in the freaking state of GA and their players can pay in-state tuition or use HOPE which frees up scholarships to go nation-wide recruiting.

Well, for one our stadium has been small and crappy for years (just get a major renovation, set to open on Friday). But even then, we used to pack the place out up until 2009 when the wheels fell of the wagon.

For two, UGA has historically been one of the best in the conference in baseball. We won the SEC's first National Title in 1990 and have made quite a few CWS appearances since. 2010-2012 set us back due to Perno's sudden inability to give a shite about recruiting or coaching and we finally fired him to bring in Scott Stricklin from Kent State in 2013. Stricklin is on his secon year and already the team looked more competent last year down the stretch than it had in the last 3 years under Perno.

In other words, kiss my arse we're working on it.

This is true, but what about 2007 when your attendance was still ranked close to 33? you were 34th.

Foley Field is a tiny stadium. Most fans sit on what was once called Kudzu Hill for free so they don't factor into the total attendance count.

The answer is we will likely never show up like other schools. There is a HUGE drop off in interest from basketball to baseball here. First month of the season is too cold to go to games, March we are usually still focused on basketball. That leaves April and a little bit of May to get decent attendance numbers.

And honestly I turn my attention to the MLB in April so it is hard to see myself ever getting into college baseball. As you said we were decent a few times under Delmonico but I had little interest even then.

Ahem, UGA was the first baseball team in the SEC to win a national title.

We were in the finals in 2008 but lost

And who cares about attendance? We have one of the smallest stadiums in the country for a major program. Visit Foley Field and the surrounding area and you'll see why it's hard to expand it. There's very little space/potential for expansion.

That's false. NCaa stats say UGA was around 34th in attendance in 2007 (the year you after you just went to the CWS)

I"m not doubting UGA's ability to bounce back. I'm doubting their ability to ever pack 5000 fans in the place on a consistent basis.

We could and should expand down the left field line and maybe even do something over the left field wall (which will cost some parking spaces), but other than that, yeah, we're pretty much restricted from doing much else.

Foley Field holds less than 3,300 people. How are we going to consistently pack 5,000 fans in the place?

I would think that the existence of the Atlanta Braves is also a big factor in UGA's attendance but idk

Well considering our seating capacity is 3,291 then yeah that's not going to happen any time soon.

The largest crowd we've ever had was 4,461 in 2009.

I mean, where are you going to put people in this:

Especially now that it looks like this:

Our baseball stadium isn't built on a flat surface out in the middle of nowhere like most other SEC stadiums. It's nestled in beside a neighborhood, an elementary school, Butts-Mehre, and our tennis facility.

I know. WHat I'm saying is will the program ever succeed enough or the administration ever be willing to expand and get a larger stadium?

They can't really. See PNW's post

Where do you see the potential to expand in these photos?

We have very limited space for any expansion, unless we decide to lengthen the 3rd base side down towards the parking lot. And even then, it's not going to increase capacity by but a few hundred.

By my estimation, we could probably expand to about 6 or 7 thousand max, and that'd require some ingenuity and sacrifice of valuable parking.

Are most stadiums like this?

Auburn, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Tennessee off the top of my head are not.

If we expanded I'd wanna see seating out in LF. It'd be awesome if we could wrap the seating around and stop at the green wall. Im not sure how realistic that would be though

It'd take willingness on the part of the AD and the University to eliminate parking spaces for it.
