Some excerpts:

quote:

Stallings' final summer of oil work was in 1957 on a rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He rode out Hurricane Audrey's 100-plus mph winds on the shaky rig, wondering if it would crumble into the sea. The storm slammed into the Texas and Louisiana coasts and killed more than 400 people, the largest death toll from a hurricane in the U.S. until Katrina hit in 2005.

"We were the only rig that wasn't evacuated," Stallings said. "Everything had broke loose. We were there two or three days. It was scary."

quote:

At the end of his sophomore year against Ohio State in the Jan. 2, 1995 Citrus Bowl, center John Causey felt his knee pop. He immediately fell to the ground, watching as the play resulted in a fumble. Looking down, he saw just how bad the injury was.

"My toes were where my heel should have been," Causey said.

quote:

"Are you hurt or are you injured?" Stallings asked, "because you can play hurt."

Causey had dislocated his knee and tore three ligaments.

Laid up in the hospital, Causey didn't expect to see Stallings until next year. The following day, his head coach came by to say hello.

"I was in there nine days and he stopped by each of those nine days," Causey said.

quote:

"He would walk around and monitor what was going on," Copeland said. "If a player did something that was stupid, bone-headed or just wasn't doing it right, he would always say something to the effect of, 'Hey man, what are you doing? Hell, John Mark can do it better than that!'"

Now retired from the NFL, Copeland still laughs at Stallings' signature barbs. How he got away with it was simple.

I got to meet Coach Stallings when he was doing his book tour right after the championship. I was still young and I took my SI cover to be autographed and the people running the signing said that nothing but his book could be signed but I could still meet him. Coach asked me when I got up there if I wanted him to sign the SI cover so to the Books A Million people

Only person I have an autograph of is from him. Got a practice ball he signed for me, and went to a book signing a year or so ago to get one for a close friend and got me a book too. While standing in line, I met a man named Dee Powell. Turns out, he had played with him as a Junction Boy. We talked a good 30 or 40 minutes before Stallings got there. He and his wife were super nice. When we got up to Stallings, he recognized him, and he(Stallings), started telling me a story about their days at College Station. One of his gifts is his ability to connect with people. I think that is one of the reason he's such an icon and beloved by fans.

I have always had a great deal of respect for Coach Stallings on and off the field.

How long do you all think that Nick Saban will coach?

If he continues to drink the blood of unborn infants every gameday? At least another 60 years.

His induction into the CFHOF is way past due in my humble opinion. I just wish that John Mark was still here to see it in person, he would have loved it, but he will just have to watch the ceremony from heaven.

We met him, John Mark, and Leroy Jordan at the Bryant Museum years ago, Coach took the time to speak with everyone who wanted to speak with him until he had to go on to his next event.

Only Bama coach during my lifetime that I didn't mind winning a NC.

Met him for the first time when I was about 9 or 10. He was still coaching Arizona at the time. Was kind enough of to let my Dad and me take a picture with him. Great man.

I dig me some Stallings even if he was a Bammer coach. He just exudes class.
