It is the worst written rule in football possibly. I remember when it happend in the UF vs Arky game. Basically with this rule a punt returner should just bobble the ball all the way to the endzone and he cant be touched

I am forwarding this genius football insight to our coaches right now.

You should forward it to the fricktard who wrote the rule Honestly, how many yards can the returner gain from bobbling the ball? It is a terribly written rule

Good point.

To the dude who said our player should get chewed out for it...come on. I do expect the players to know more about the rules than I do. But, with that said, to both know about this idiotic rule and be able to keep yourself from diving at a muffed punt would be quite an accomplishment. We shouldn't have rules where you have to run avoid a loose ball.

shite happens.

If you had bothered to read the rule you're saying is terribly written, you'd see that the answer to your question is zero; when a fair catch is called, the ball is spotted where the first contact is made even if it is bobbled forward before securing it.

The idiots in this thread haven't read the rule, or don't understand the distinction between the different rules that apply to a fair-catch as opposed to a regular catch.

The rule is that if you bobble it forward, it gets placed where you originally touched or.

Now what if you bobble it forward 20 yards, then it hits the ground and is recovered by your teammate?

This is exactly what I'm wondering.

Besides, the rule isn't that you can't recover the ball until it hits the ground, it's that you can't recover it until the returner has a chance to bring in the bobbled ball.

In this particular case the returner bobbled it in the air, attempted to catch again, and instead of recovering it basically tossed it to the Vandy player who was standing in place and in no way interfering with his recovery of the kick.

I just don't understand how you can expect a guy to play hot potato when the ball is delivered directly into his hands.

It's a judgement call by the official at that point. The idea that an official could make that call in that situation is a perfect point of reference to the incompetence of the often maligned SEC officiating.
