It should be important to note here that Vanderbilt isn't just going against the United Daughters of the Confederacy and striking the "Confederate" name from the building. They tired that a decade ago and failed.
They're using donated funds to repay the UDC for their original donation in 2016 dollars. The UDC probably isn't too upset to be receiving $1.2 million.

Apparently I mean you. A lot of people thought the wars I fought in were ill advised, unjust, and unfair to the people in the countries in which I fought. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the friends I had who dies in the those wars should be honored regardless because they were only trying to serve their country. That memorial hall does NOT honor the government of the Confederacy, it honors the men who died fighting under it, in their minds to protect their homes and people. I absolutely believe the world is better for the Confederate defeat. I also believe that slavery is one of the worst, if not the worst, evil ever perpetrated by the the people of the United States. But every time I see something that gives me qualms I don't want it scraped away and forgotten.

Good job Vandy. This needed to go a long arse time ago. It's a shame though that they're paying the Daughters 1.2 million.

This should be on the Poli board but it rings loud and clear of the truth. The liberal democrats who champion for minorities are the biggest hypocrites out there. They perpetuate the welfare state and keep the black community and other minorities dependent on the government to win votes period. When did Hillary Clinton visit the ghetto? When did Obama? When have they created jobs for that community. They haven't they have stood by and let jobs be sent over seas that those folks could have been apart of and instead gave cell phones.

But isn't true that the welfare state was created because the lack of opportunity that were afforded to blacks? It isn't like white business owners were just lining up to employee blacks and pay them equal wages back in the 60s, especially in the south

No, he didn't create the klan. He was chosen to lead it early on. Forrest also tried to disband the klan as he disagreed with the activities its members were partaking in. He was also invited to speak at one of the precursors of the NAACP later in his life.
I am not trying to say he was always a nice guy. He could be savage in his brutality at many parts of his life. On the whole, his actions paint a negative picture of him when viewed in their totality. Learn about things, make your own assessments, and move on. But trying to avoid talking about the past by hiding it is, IN MY OPINION, a mistake.

most states in the confederate in their declaration of secession listed slavery as one of the main points of seceding.
I have no problem with the heritage part, display it, love it, do what you please.
Just dont tell black people in the same breath to get over slavery.

It is also worth noting that the naming of this hall (and the receipt of $50k from the Daughters of the Confederacy for the naming rights) pre-dated its association with Vanderbilt. This dormitory is on the old George Peabody College for Teachers campus, which merged with Vanderbilt in 1979.

That is exactly why I said there is a distinction between the Confederate government and poor soldiers swept up, oftentimes against their will, into the war effort. I said from the beginning that the Confederacy deserved to lose, not because of the legality of secession, but because slavery was an absolute atrocity.
My people fled here from oppression and famine that left as many as a million dead and caused a roughly equal number to flee the country. I don't expect the British to scrape off every connection to the government of the time. I would rather people just talked about what happened.

No it's not true it was created by FDR during the depression as a temporary fix for people out of work. As usual with government sponsored programs it gets abused. And I'm talking of doing more to promote black business owners in there own communities. Give those communities more sense of pride in going to work instead of waiting for a check every month and resorting to gangs and crime.
