Alabama and Georgia seem to be on a collision course to meet in the SEC Championship Game. With both being so dominant, many can’t determine which team is better. Who better to ask than Derek Mason?

Vanderbilt’s coach is the only man in the country to face both at this point and hosted both teams in a span of three weeks. He saw first hand how overwhelming their talent is in getting clobbered 59-0 by the Crimson Tide and 45-14 by the Bulldogs.

On Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference, Mason was asked pretty simply who he felt had the better squad, and he gave the nod to the Tide based on one particular area.

“Having played both teams, Alabama’s the better team, just in my mind. … I think where the difference is in Alabama’s secondary. … Alabama’s just a purely dominant defense right now.”

“Georgia is being built like Alabama,” Mason added. “It looks very, very similar.”

Up to this point, Alabama and Georgia have gone perfect through seven games, and the Tide lead the FBS in point differential at +228. The Dawgs are fifth, outscoring their opponents by a combined 175 points.

Both teams have posted one shutout apiece, both in road games against Tennessee schools. Alabama’s came in that aforementioned game in Nashville, while Georgia’s came in Knoxville against the Vols, 41-0.

Next up for No. 1 Alabama is a matchup against Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Meanwhile, No. 3 Georgia is off before playing its own rivalry game against Florida in Jacksonville.

Seems like a pretty fair assessment.

I appreciate his candor. It's better than the BS that most coaches spew whenever they're asked to compare two teams.

I think most on here would agree with this.

Would agree. But I also don't think it will have any bearing on how the actual game (if it happens) will play out. I think it's a toss up right now with Bama having a slight edge.

Fair assessment. I think we are playing extremely well, but that there is still a sizable gap between the programs still.

Nice to hear that the biggest difference was the secondary and not the lines

We're going to break our foot off in Bama's arse.

If by slight you mean Bama being 10 point favorites.

Yep, and Mason as a defensive coach would know. Our pass rush was sorely lacking against Vandy and Shurmur is a good QB and made some nice passes against us.

I have to imagine that Bama's OL is better than ours. But the Vandy DL is so bad they maybe they can't tell the difference. Our OL had their best game of the season against Vandy. But even last week regressed back to our norm.

And then get blown out on one foot by a Bama team with something in their arse

Sorry. Bama's 10 points better than UGA right now. Too early to know what type of attrition each team will have between now and December, too early to know what the spread would be in the SECCG.

If we both make it. UGA's looking like a lock right now, although I picked UK to win the East and they have a shot.

I think UGA has a legit shot at beating Bama. A few big plays and this thing swings. My only knocks on UGA presently would be the OL and Fromm gets alittle careless with the ball.

I see a tighter Game than 10 points. JMO

I'd think it would've awesome to played either one, both for different reasons of course. I really haven't watched Georgia but would think they'd be in the early faze of Kirby having the 85 player team he will in the a couple of years. They'll be at a disadvantage against Bama but it's football and a couple turnovers and good bounces their way they could definitely win.

Bama's o-line has been pretty good in general, but not consistently, especially in pass protection against really good d-fronts when they rush more than four.

The media is the advertising for these two universities. That being said, Mason should have said. Vanderbilt is the better team. We just beat ourselves.

Bama is a better team. Fortunately for Georgia, Bama's offensive strengths are what Georgia is good at containing. Unfortunately for Georgia, Bama's defense is good at everything. I think it'll be a good game that Bama will end up winning by a hair. If the game even happens, anyway.

I would hope Alabama has the better team. they have had the last 6 or 7 straight #1 recruiting classes.

Until somebody can knock them off, they should always be considered the favorite.

It takes an incredibly accurate dual threat QB to beat the Tide.

Kirby's defenses at Bama always had trouble stopping dual threat QB.

Also, it's best if a team runs a spread offense to beat the Tide. A pro style offense hasn't beaten the Tide since 2011.
