We'll see. I don't think they "win easily". That's a very complex offense to prepare for when they don't see it every season like Georgia does, and Georgia has struggled with Ga-Tech lately themselves.

Georgia has struggled with them when they have a DC seeing it for the first time. 2008 was Johnson's first year at GT and it was a loss. 2014 was Pruitt's first year at UGA and it was a loss. 2016 was Kirby/Tucker's first year and it was a loss. 2010 was a win in Grantham's first year but it was a shootout

Is UTs DC not seeing GA-Tech for the first time?

Yes but he's had 7 months to prepare for it
ETA: Besides their FCS openers, the only time I remember them doing well against a team who had time to prepare was the Orange Bowl against Mississippi State

That's a long time to prepare but it still presents problems. Teams like that don't have to have good Olineman talent because the emphasis isn't on leverage and moving Dline off the ball. They just dive and roll at your legs every snap and it's frustrating to watch your Dline get mowed down like that.

I agree with this statement. You can prepare all you want, but it's not what they are used to seeing and the frustration builds when your legs feel like mush after the first quarter. We are going to see how well the new strength and conditioning coach got these guys ready or not. Butch has been harping on "toughness" all summer. We shall see.

It's not just their Olineman that cut block either. All of them are coached to do it, so even in pursuit, guys will be flying up on you blind and cutting your Ds legs out from under them at full speed instead of cold-cocking them.
Cut blocking really negates talent differentials in the trenches I don't care how good your front 7 is. When you face a team that's really efficient at it, if you can't stay on your feet, your talent doesn't matter.

If this game were in November sandwiched between 2 conference games, I'd say Ga Tech wins. However, with ample time to prepare, I think the Vols win this one.
UT 31-24
UT 31-24

Our OL actually doesn't cut block as we did in Johnson's early years. PJ has recruited bigger on the OL and we incorporated more drive blocking. Also, on a lot of our option plays, depending on weaknesses in the defense, our OL will only chip the Dline and get to the second level to block the LB'ers and safeties. Letting the DL go is fine because the QB and pitch key are already outside of them by that point. They only need to hit the chip to get that one second of time to get the play outside and get numbers on the secondary.
Contrary to popular belief and those who really don't watch GT football, our line doesn't just drop straight to the ground every play. Our blocking scheme is complex and cutting isn't as big a part of it as you think.
Now...our Abacks will cut safties and DB's on the outside when blocking for the QB or pitch key. They cut because they are smaller. There is nothing more awesome that seeing your 6 foot 2 215 pound all conference safety not seeing the blocker coming because he is too focused on the pitch and then whap! a perfectly executed cut block puts his feet above his head and on his arse.
I am not putting a score prediction, but in my 9 years of watching teams play against PJ's offense teams that face this offense for the first time have a really hard time with it. Some programs would purposefully schedule a GA southern or Navy before playing us to get a warm up. UT hasn't played a triple option team in I don't know how long. Not under Butch Jones. New DC too. The time to prepare thing is a bit of a myth as well. Miss St. had a full month to focus and GT handled them pretty easily. Kentucky had the same last year. In general though, when you have a team full of guys that have never played against GT's spread option it is EXTREMELY difficult for them to really grasp it no matter how much time they've had. No scout team can replicate the speed and proficiency at which GT runs their system and that's the difficult part to get. Make no mistake, UT's defense will more than likely struggle no matter how much time they've had to prepare simply because all of their players have not faced a spread option team like GT and it makes a huge difference.

To be frank there are so many unknowns with our team this year I'm simultaneous expecting us to go 7-5 and 10-2. This is easily the least certain I've been one way or the other heading into a season.

Because I'm worried a UF football player might steal my credit card or something...

As for cut blocks... I dont watch a lot of GT, but I'm pretty positive that you are cutting guys on the backside of every run (even power running schemes do that).
The reputation for GT (at least against UGA ) are the illegal chop blocks that get called every year (and don't get called).
You are absolutely correct about 1st time seeing the option. Todd Grantham, Jeremy Pruitt, and Mel Tucker all struggled their first seasons against GT. Johnson lives, breathes, and sleeps that offense, and he knows how to confuse 18-22 year Olds taught how a traditional hs defense defends against the option.

Game is on Monday...but your point stands. Tuesday will be triage day.

That is actually a pretty good post (especially from you). I'm thinking you will only reappear post game if Ga Tech wins...so I don't anticipate seeing you after Monday.

Shoop is seeing the GT offense for the first time. However, our DB coach Warren coached at Air Force for 7? years, and they run a very similar system. He should be able to provide useful insight on how to defend.

If Tech doesn't engage in an early season fumble fest (which has happened), I think Tech wins. Tech winning depends on holding the ball and grinding the UT defense down.

It all depends on UT's defensive success on 1st and 2nd down, forcing GT into 3rd and long.
