How do Cal and Virginia live in the shadows of other in-state programs? Cal may not be as successful in athletics as UCLA, but it's the flagship school in the UC system and one of the most prestigious universities in the country. That school is focused on academics.

Virginia might not have quite the cache of Cal, but it, too, is far more focused on its academic reputation than its athletic reputation. It is by no means second fiddle in Virginia to Va Tech.
