Undefeated national champions vs. one/two loss national champions

I have always found this debate rather fascinating. When arguing over which national championship team was better you tend to see people claim that if they didn't finish the season undefeated they shouldn't be in the discussion. I have never really subscribed to this line of thinking because not every season is like the other.
A good example is 1978 Alabama vs. 1979 Alabama. Many people on this board will saying that '79 Alabama was obviously the better of the two teams. They finished 12-0 while '78 Alabama finished 11-1. But once you compare the schedules you see that might not be the case:
1978 Alabama Football Team
20-3 win vs. #10 Nebraska (9-3)
38-20 win @ #11 Missouri (8-4)
14-24 loss vs. #7 USC (12-1)
51-28 win vs. Vanderbilt (2-9)
20-17 win @ Washington (7-4)
23-12 win vs. Florida (4-7)
30-17 win @ Tennessee (5-5-1)
35-0 win vs. Virginia Tech (4-7)
35-14 win vs. Mississippi State (6-5)
31-10 win vs. #10 LSU (8-4)
34-16 win vs. Auburn (6-4-1)
14-7 win vs. #1 Penn State (11-1)
1979 Alabama Football Team
30-6 win @ Georgia Tech (4-6-1)
45-0 win vs. Baylor (8-4)
66-3 win @ Vanderbilt (1-10)
38-0 win vs. Wichita State (1-10)
40-0 win @ Florida (0-10-1)
27-17 win vs. #18 Tennessee (7-5)
31-7 win vs. Virginia Tech (5-6)
24-7 win vs. Mississippi State (3-8)
3-0 win @ LSU (7-5)
25-18 win vs. #14 Auburn (8-3)
24-9 win vs. #6 Arkansas (10-2)
Only 3 of Alabama's opponents finished below .500 in 1978 as opposed to 6 in 1979. 4 of those had 8 or more losses in '79 while only 1 team on Alabama's schedule had 8 or more losses in 1978. The '78 Tide also traveled out of conference to play games in Missouri and Washington, both teams that finished with winning records. Alabama's only trip out of conference in '79 was a trip to play eventual 4-6-1 Georgia Tech in nearby Atlanta.
While it is obvious that 1979 Alabama had the better season, finishing their campaign undefeated with no ties to speak of, which was the better TEAM?

2001 Miami played a shitty schedule and championship opponent and so did 2011 Alabama. I'd put 2009 Alabama above both of them.
People only remember how much NFL talent Miami had and forget how weak the schedule was that year. Alabama played a Top 20 VT, #2 Florida (final), Texas in the championship, and other serviceable opponents. Games were close here and there, but ultimately, that was a hell of a team. Would've squashed both squads.

While I think the Newton team should be in the top five, the '07 LSU team had a more impressive resume than several of the 1-loss teams.

'06 Florida probably belongs ahead of the Alabama and Auburn squads ahead of them on this list.

Which should count for more, who you beat or who you lost to?

Better schedule does not always mean better team.

Texas was the better team in 09, but losing McCoy screwed it up.
I mean... Bama was a blocked field goal away from losing to Tennessee.

2011 Bama would have shut him down big time.

Too many close calls and issues on offense. 01 and 09 were better.
Now our 08 team was top 5 in scoring defense, scoring offense, and sos.

The fact is LSU had 2 losses. They are at the bottom of the list.

#1 is '95 Nebraska
#2 is '01 Miami
everybody else.

i am not gonna say 2007 LSU would have the highest winning percentage if we played these teams against each other 100 times.
But they were a fricking juggernaut when healthy and on. Just mauled some really good teams.
