Nice attempt at deflection but David Duke was a low level wanna be.. George Wallace was the elected Guvnah.

There's absolutely no way you can compare the governor of a state who tried to physically stop a major university from desegregating to a random guy who poisoned trees. Wallace's stand was a significang story everywhere, not just in Alabama. Not to mention the fact that, like you said, he was the elected governor.

Now, if the president of the UA National Alumni Association had poisoned the trees, you'd have a point.

If the oak trees along the gulf coast are slowing making it back after Katrina, they will in time as well. Oaks are some tough arse trees.

I feel bad for the trees. Of course I felt bad for them before getting shite paper thrown all over them.

At least they'll soon be out of their misery.

I'm gonna jump on that other guys train of thought and say that all those vessels include men in white robes and pointy hats....because David Duke once ran for "Guvnah" there.

Just didn't like the analogy.

Yeah that was a bad analogy..comparing something that the football player did to the player's fanbase? Bad analogy

Comparing something that one of the fanbase did to the whole of the fanbase? Better analogy

Well there was that one time that LSU fan yelled Tiger Bait at that other team's fan.

On behalf of all LSU fans, I apologize for the tiger bait screamer.

Dimiss the perception as you may, but outside the South.....most would see Harvey as a fair representative of the average Bama fan.

Just mention George Wallace to a "Yankee" and see what kind of opinion you get ....60 years later.

I live about as far outside the South as one can (without leaving the lower 48) and I can tell you that it's a perception of the South as a whole and not one state in particular. Alabama and Mississippi may have some more visible memories from the 50s and 60s but let's not forget David Duke was in a runoff for governor of Louisiana in 1991 and only lost because enough of us had good sense enough to realize a crook was better than a Klansman in sheep's clothing.

But I can also tell IDGAF what Yankees think about the South. 27 years of living in Baton Rouge taught me all I need to know about the people of the South. It is the people that make the South the great place that it is. The people make the food and make the culture. I love a lot of things about Oregon but it will never compete with the South when it comes to having such a rich homegrown cultural experience. There's plenty of culture here but most of it is imported from somewhere else and didn't organically evolve here.

I don't spend too much time worrying about how outsiders perceive the South. They don't know what I know and I don't care if they ever do.

These things run in cycles. The Barn version of Harvey Updyke is currently sitting in a trailer park planning his/her revenge for some perceived slight. BOOK IT.

George Wallace was "Guvnah" during a terrible time in US history. He also won a large percentage of the black vote when he did an about face during his presidental campaign.

A terrible time, during the explosion of TV onto the World scene in which there were three networks. Pretty sure everybody saw "the news" back then. I did, of course there wasn't nuthin else to watch on the new fangled invention either.

During the explosion of "cable TV" onto the world stage.. Let just say a "highly segmented audience" I didn't live in La at the time..and didn't see much of Mr Duke at all and I didn't look for it either cause I was getting my money for nothing and my chicks for free...on MTV

But then again, that my viewpoint and perception.
