The SEC, sans a couple of teams, really sucks this year. Alabama just got their asses handed to them by VCU.
It's called parity. VCU is actually a really good team. They may be ranked soon. They have 3 losses so far, and two of them are to Louisville and Mizzou - and they gave us a game. Plus you played them in their house. There's no shame in losing to a team that makes the tournament regularly.
There is much more parity in basketball than in football. That said, I think the SEC should be a stronger basketball league than it is.

With all of the coaching changes, shitty recruiting classes and the traditional dumpsterfires that exist in this league?

I was talking about the OP.
Got ya.
The OP makes it seem that the "little guys' should never be in a game with a BCS school. It is true that Iona is a small school (less than 5k undergraduate) and plays in a mid-major conference. But we compete for talent with big East teams and often get quality NYC ball players.
We've had our successes over the years, particularly back in the Jeff Ruland days, but it's only once every few years we get votes in the Top 25.
We also lose coaches to the bigs. Jim Valvano, Pat Kennedy, Tim Welsh, Kevin Willard. I am sure that the bigs will be knocking on Tim Cluess' door soon. He's in his 3rd season and has had 25 win seasons in his first 2 years.

Honestly semo, other than this year we've been fairly good overall this past decade. Obviously there's UK which needs no explaining. UF and UT have also been very, very good. Bama has had a run or 2, LSU had one fantastic year in 2006, Arkansas and MSU have been ok here and there, and hell even UGA made the tournament.
Also, and I'm not meaning to go on a tangent here, I truly belive UGA's 2003 team could've been a final 4 team. We were fricking loaded and I really honestly think we were one of the best teams in the country. Unfortunately, that was when the Harrick shite was going down and Michael Adams's pussy bitch arse decided to self impose a postseason ban.....in probably the 2nd best season in UGA basketball history.

That's what I mean! The SEC has too much money, talent and pride not to be a top level basketball conference too. WG's point is well made, that it's been stronger than it seems to be this year.
Oh, well. Hopefully we'll acclimate a little quicker in basketball than football.
