It's not a terrible hire, but the dude showed he couldn't get it done with NFL talent here at Georgia. Maybe it will be different at UL.

Also, I don't really know how well he recruits. Most of our big fish defensive guys come here because of Richt anyway.

This. Petrino DGAF about defense, so the DC hire was always going to be inconsequential.

This is is probably the biggest question -- how is Grantham's recruiting? Petrino doesn't need a DC, he needs baller recruiters because he knobs at it, especially on defense.

We started several different linebackers this year, 2 of which were walk-on seniors and another who was a true freshman. That alone should scare the eff out of Louisville fans. Petrino is probably the worst defensive talent evaluator I've ever seen, as evidenced by the fact that he signed 9 linebackers from 2010 to 2012, and only one of them is still on campus. One was moved to fullback (Kiero Small), one played out his eligibility (Alonzo Highsmith), and the rest washed out or never made it to campus.

2012 was inexplicable. The talent was there yet Alabama ran like a hot knife through butter in the SECCG. But they seemed solid against the pass in that game.

If I was a UGA fan I'd be right now but at the same time you wonder if it was a culture thing. Too relaxed. Too enjoy the moment. Too Bobby Bowden like.

Smart can fix that.

Actually, is it just me or did the typical UGA stupid drive saving penalties on defense subside this year and last?

It used to be that UGA's defense would have a 3rd and 10, sack the QB, but then hold on there is a flag... 15 yard penalty for DB punching a WR 40 yards away from the play and after the play was over, 1st down.

That stuff kind of didn't seem to happen as much this year.

We typically just gave up the first down straight up this year

It didn't happen because our DB's were usually giving a 10 yard cushion to receivers and didn't touch them after they caught the ball.

Actually, Grantham is a good recruiter. Especially when it comes to OLBs. UL is about to start landing better pass ruhsers than you've ever had on that team before. Those type of players are CTGs bread and butter and he is VERY good at recruiting them.
