Can some Gators explain to me why there is such an expectation that your D will continue to be dominant this season?

I see a new coordinator, tons of talent heading to the NFL and a lot of 3*s replacing them?

Just underrated guys that have proven more?

TN lost less on D and people act like we are in a complete rebuild, just not understanding.

TN
Defense starters – 2 5*, 8 4*s, 1 3* (average grade JR)
Defense backups – 1 5*, 4 4*’s, 6 3*’s (average grade JR)

FL
Defense starters – 1 5*, 5 4*s, 5 3*s (average grade JR)
Defense backups – 4 4*’s, 4 3*’s, 2 2*’s, 1 U/R (average grade SO)

Well, I can tell you that Florida has traditionally gotten more bang for their buck with defensive talent than anyone in the country.

What is yet to be seen is if McElwain can coach them up.

I think they'll be a top 25ish unit, but nothing like the last few years.

I saw Phil Steele's unit rankings and he has UF DL and DBs 2 and LBs 5 in SEC. Seems impossible to me.

Yeah, I don't buy that. Some nice players, but I don't see the matchup problems that they've had in the past. Zuniga, Jefferson, Dawson, and Gardner are pretty good but not scary. I don't see a ton up the middle at DT, LB, or S.

Phil Steele says, "The last nine years Florida has allowed an avg of just 17.6 ppg. Last year they were allowing just 11.7 ppg in the first 7, but then injuries hit and it was 26.6 ppg the last 5 prior to the Bowl(16.8 year). This year they have just 5 starters back(57%tkls#94) but will still be strong with 16's injuries making them more experienced than the numbers suggest."

Tennessee's starting defense broken down using Rivals rankings coming out of HS and Class/Year:

4* DE -- Darrell Taylor -- RS SO
5* DT -- Khalil McKenzie -- JR
3* DT -- Kendal Vickers -- RS SR / 4* DT -- Shy Tuttle -- JR
5* DE -- Jonathan Kongbo -- RS JR

4* LB: Darrin Kirkland Jr. -- JR
4* LB: Cortez McDowell -- SR

4* S: Todd Kelly Jr. -- SR
4* CB: Justin Martin -- SR
4* NB: Rashaan Gaulden -- RS JR
4* CB: Shaq Wiggins -- SR
4* S: Nigel Warrior -- SO

# of 5* -- 2
# of 4* -- 8
# of 3* -- 1 (0 if counting Tuttle & not Vickers at DT)

# of upperclassmen starters (3+ years with program): 10
# of underclassmen starters (2 years or less with program): 1

Florida fans, how does that stack up to your starting 11?

I was just thinking about this the other day.

All I have heard on here is that they will be stout again.

How?

Based on what exactly?

The new coordinator is Randy Shannon. He is not exactly new at being a DC and has been around the program for awhile.

The 3*s that are starting have already proven themselves in SEC play.

The LSU game. Except for CB, the defensive starters for the LSU game are the projected starters for 2017

You do realize LSU had 423 yds of offense and drove the ball inside your 5 yard line 5 times. Unfortunately we shot our own foot off repeatedly and only got 1 TD and 1 FG on those drives. And they were all actual drives, no cheapies off turnovers.

Didn't their CB's last season suck quite bad or under perform? If so why are they huge losses? Surely someone will step up.

Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson were both 2nd round picks and multi-year All-SEC players. They most definitely did not suck.

10 points

LSU offense did not get one yard when it mattered most.

Why is recruiting stars the measure of a defense? Unless you're starting all true freshmen, it doesn't make sense to make judgments based on stars.
