Never. Never, ever. Alabama would never play UAB in football, because UAB should never ever even have a football team, former Crimson Tide coach Bill Curry shouted from the Capstone’s gilded rooftop in 1989—”We have a team in the University system and I’m the coach”— when the Blazers first dared dream of gridiron glory.

So who did Birmingham News sportswriter Wayne Martin go to when he wanted counter-quote on the pigskin potential of what was then the second-largest university in the state? The man who had just defied the Tide’s pledge to never, ever play another team, at least on its home field: Pat Dye.

And Dye, as Dye does, laid it out there.

“What I really believe is that the people of UAB and the City of Birmingham should be left alone to decide their athletic future based completely on what they feel is in the best interest of UAB and the City of Birmingham, not what other people decide.”

And if UAB decided football was in it’s best interest, would Auburn agree to a game? To a series? “I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t play UAB,” Dye said.

Think Dye pretty much nailed it 25 years ago.

I see the logic there, but maybe it is time that UAB and Alabama have outgrown the umbrella of one BoT?
At close to 20,000 students, I think representation on the board needs to be more reflective or it is time for an amicable break.

There are limited resources and competing priorities.....

UAB would probably get what they want re: football under normal circumstances.

However, this is not a normal circumstance when you have arguably the most storied franchise in college football less than an hour away. Anywhere else it probably wouldn't be much of an issue...at Alabama its an issue. A program I might add that over the years has been a cash engine that has helped develop the University of Alabama system. Do I really have to remind you how UAB was formed?

Again, I am all for UAB becuase its good for eveyone....but they want to ultimately compete with the program in Tuscaloosa and that really is just a non-starter.

Who are the "people of UAB"?

You do realize that UAB is an extension of THE University of Alabama? You do realize the medical and dental schools were a part of THE University of Alabama (all diplomas said that including my family members' medical diplomas) until UAB slapped their logo on it.
I agree free UAB. They can be the University of Birmingham or what ever. However we (University of Alabama Alumni and students) want OUR medical and dental schools back.
You don't have a clue what you are talking about. Just mad.

Where is AUM's football team?

Do you even go to the SOuth Games. Attendance is fine. You only have to average greater than 15k. South has done it the right way. They will have a on campus stadium in a few years. They sold out the Miss St game. You are mistaken here.

Dye is a frickin' hypocrite. When that article was published, he already made the decision to move the Iron Bowl out of Birmingham. Dye and Auburn have zero ricks to give about Birmingham when it served their interests. The lack of any momentum re: a new stadium started when Auburn selfishly decided to move the Iron Bowl out of Birmingham.

It is pretty humorous seeing all these alligator tears for UAB when AUM isn't even allowed to play football - at any level. Certainly not D1.

Auburn is threatened by AUM and thus has blocked a football program from ever even starting. This is well known

That "economic engine" wouldn't even exist if not for the University of Alabama investing hundreds of millions of dollars putting their medical program in Birmingham in the first place.

The truth is that Dye and the AU posters in this thread don't really care about UAB. What Dye cared about was screwing Bama over anyway he could to get a competitive advantage.

It's complete b.s. for him to be mouthing off about what we should do for UAB football and Birmingham, when on the other hand he refused to even play the Iron Bowl in Birmingham demanding it be moved to JHS.....but that is Pat Dye for you......

that supposition isnt even logical. the entire school was chartered as a satellite of UA. problem is UAB has outgrown its charter. why dont you post the ENTIRE history of dispute over the medical school? is it because maybe its you who doesnt have a clue of what he speaks? comparing UAB to AUM would seem to prove this to be the case. hey, its a free country. continue to flap away so the who world is assured of your ignorance.

probably for the obvious reason that AUM has never once expressed interest in fielding a team? you people get dumber by the second.

AUM knows that AUA would never allow another program in the system, certainly not within a stones throw from the cow college. What does AUA have to fear?

IMHO, AUA should at least build them a division 2 or 3 team. Think of the children!!

Listen up folks when [auburnphan23] makes a statement like this.....then you KNOW there's truth to it. Very few people give two shits about uab football
