With six seconds left in the Iron Bowl and down by one point, yes, it was. 52 yards is a long FG for any era.

And although kickers used a tee back then, kickers today have a lot more emphasis on their craft just like every other position. I would rather a random 2024 college kicker (including the entire operation of snapper, holder, protection) attempt a 52 yard FG to win a game than one from 1985.

My cousin, who lurks on here, is giving me hell about not putting Alabama 2022 and Georgia 2016 on here instead of these two.

First off, the Georgia win was UT's the whole way. After Georgia got a last second desperation bomb, UT returned the favor with the Dobb nail boot. I totally expected Tennessee to win that game for all but about 10 seconds of it. The ending wasn't iconic, but it WAS comic (in that I was laughing my azz off at Kirby's dazed and confused look and all the surrender cobras in the stands).

Besides, I don't think Georgia was even ranked, while UT was one spot out of the top ten.

EDIT: Correction: Georgia was barely ranked, taking the final spot at #25. The AP got them in there so it would be MUH TOP 25 MATCHUP.

As far as Gumpfest '22, while a great ending, its only one season removed. That's much too early to give it 'iconic ending' status like has been awarded to Arkansas 98 and ND 91 in my opinion.

FIFY

Georgia was ranked #12 in the AP the week before, then got blasted by Ole Miss and fell to #25.

Only about a quarter of the stadium even realized the game was over- most found out when the streamers went off. One of the best games I've seen irl

Not to dis Van Tiffin's kick...

But kickers were still using kicking tees back then. A 52 yarder wasn't THAT big a deal.

All the longest field goals in NCAA history come from the kicking tee/missed field goals come back to the 20 yard line era.

Tiffin kicked with a tee but they had changed the rule to the missed field goal goes to the LOS. So by then we only got the long attempts at the end of halves. Which is probably why you got the impression that a 52 yarder was unusual. Because under the "new rule" it was.

But in the late '70s dudes were routinely kicking 50+ field goals so often that they had to change the rule.

It was one of the greatest games in BAMA /Barner folklore. The game had the big names, with Bo Jackson, Brent Fullwood, and Tommy Agee, and BAMA with Mike Shula, Bobby Humphrey, Albert Bell, and Gene Jelks. No timeouts left and less than a minute to travel the length of the field in what was already a crazy game of back and forth. BAMA barely got out of bounds a few times going down the field. Mike Shula had a gift about late comebacks. (See Georgia game.) Yeah, Van Tiffin was all that and more in his time at the Capstone.

Still, 2nd and 26 was stunning. It meant so much. The Blitz and the screen in 2012 in Baton Rouge because it broke so many hearts. But 4th and 31 is going to eventually get there as well. Never have so many gone from a victory parade to a funeral procession at the speed of light. And it all happened as the barner had the 10th anniversary of the Kick.

Vince Young was never tackled on that drive? Every play was either a completed or incomplete pass, or he ran out of bounds / in the end zone.

No idea what you're talking about. You know you can look these things up, right?

You are making a big assumption that this moron can use youtube lol. He's one of the dumbest posters on this board and that's saying a lot
