Ice is the worst. It makes it such that the trucks cannot even operate on it to melt everything. Its harder to melt than snow so once its set in it just melt and refreezes over and over until temps really come up.

Also, it isn't just an Atlanta problem.

Raleigh had an almost identical situation either last year or the year before in which they had roughly an inch of ice that stranded thousands of people on the roads and shut down the city for a few days.

Ice sucks.

Oh, I know it isn't an Atlanta problem. I'm originally from Ohio and I don't want anything to do with ice. You can't drive on it if you don't have chains on your tires and no one down here has them.

Luckily, people are so scarred from Snowpocalypse that anytime anything like this comes up the default position is just "Yea, I'm gonna work at home".

I've never seen an entire population of millions of people almost all individually have a terrible story from a storm like that (outside of a Hurricane or something). It's pretty nuts how implanted on the Metro mindset that storm is (and understandably so).

They've done pretty well the last few years, so hopefully they knock this one out too.

If not and I can't get out Monday morning, I'll burn down GDOT straight Sherman style.

People in the South trying to operate in the ice can be very funny and sad. Texas can be really bad.

Honest question - is anybody "good" at driving on ice? Snow can clearly be learned (much like driving in piss pouring thunderstorms), but I just can't imagine anyone developing a skill at driving over something that makes it impossible to control the thing you are driving.

Now, people can freak out I guess and drive too fast and make it worse, or freeze up and just not move, but in terms of just simply driving.......there isn't much you can do when everything in front of you is an iceblock.

JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL!

Northerners are born with the natural ability to drive in winter weather.

Yeah, I work for a government agency and our office sent out a memo that we're free to go at 3 p.m. tomorrow... or sooner if needed.

Having learned to drive in snow country and now living in Florida, I would not leave the house if there were any amount of ice on the road here.

Folks would be all over the ditches.

Living both in Arkansas and Texas, it can be funny just to see the difference. In Southwest Texas everyone loses their shite with a little ice and don't know/don't care how to drive in it. Arkansas gets a decent amount of wintry weather almost every year. Not that they are great but 10x better than Texas. That is to be expected with more experience though.

There's huge bust potential with this storm, could get nothing at all.

I am thinking that too. NWS issued a winter storm warning about 30-45 minutes ago for 4PM tomorrow - 1PM Saturday. Typically the winter events with huge lead times/hype are busts. It is the ones that are underforecast that blow in like its Buffalo.

Todays afternoon runs, The GFS model shows 6-10 inches of snow, while the ECMWF shows little to nothing.

So what do you guys feel like will happen in Metro Atlanta? More confident in a small event than a big one?

More importantly, what's your feel on the temperatures and melt off on Saturday and Sunday?

I live in Johns Creek east northeast of the city. The NOAA just upped our new snow accumulation from 2-4 to 3-5. High temp Saturday is 33 and 37 Sunday but sunny and clear. I would imagine what falls Friday night and Saturday morning sticks around to midday Sunday.

It was horrible in Norfolk because the population there is from everywhere and half of them had never seen snow in their lives before. Fortunately I grew up learning how to drive in snowy and icy conditions

only 1 of the fan bases traveling to Tampa will fly and it's not these folks

the 75 corridor from Maconga on down will probably start experiencing delays and pile-ups as soon as tomorrow when Moo U gets their parade rolling South to Tampa. 3-days down. 3 days back.
