Did Jacoby get any spring work in at WR? We wanted to land that kid badly.

Nope just safety. First crack there and the safety position kind of worked itself out with Paris, Battle, Delpit and Harris being the front runners. At WR it is still very wide open after DJ Chark. He played both ways in high school and dominated at the all american game week at WR.

Analytically, this can be seen in several ways.

(1) he stunk at safety - unlikely being a 5-star, early enrollee.

(2) he is just a good athlete who the coaches would like to get on the field but can't find a place for and do not want to confine him to the special teams - possibly, but top freshmen don't usually play receiver unless they are truly a receiver...

(3) He is a terrific 5-star type receiver - unlikely or he would have been recruited nationwide as a receiver.

(4) the secondary is so solid and deep there is no need for his 5-star early-enrollee presence so they have to find something for him to do other than special teams - maybe, but you cannot have too many top-line DBs, and the secondary lost two top rated guys and is suspect on experience emphasizing the need for multiple player package options.

(5) the wide receiver corps this year stinks, so coaches must move a 5-star DB to receiver to have someone, anyone, who can catch a ball - hummmmmm.....

After painstaking analysis, door #5 - the most likely case.

Chark 6'4 198
Anderson 6'6 223
Sullivan 6'6 230
Davis 6'4 218
McMath(F) 6'3 215
Netherly(F) 6'3 194

That leaves Gage(who switched from S to WR after Miles was fired) and Derrick Dillon as the only true slot receivers we have. So moving Jacoby Stevens to slot makes all the sense here. Dude will ball out at 6'2 216.

I will go with option 2. He was also a true receiver. I think he is perceived as too good to not play somewhere early on.

RB, you have demonstrated some knowledge of football and some appreciation of just how hard a game it is. You even occasionally indicated that unlike many fans, you are aware that other teams have players, coaches, and actually may have some talent too. But this post of yours is ridiculous.

I don't give a shite that the average LSU fan doesn't want to even hear that there might be some BYU players to be aware of. And I am surprised but don't give a shite that you can't stand to read even thumbnails about the BYU OL, no editorials, just the thumbnails. It is so typical that it is typical...any post about any team on LSU schedule is taken as trolling LSU... laughable... but I do find it strange you joined in the downvoting.

But really.... taking the adverbs and adjectives out of this post, isn't that EXACTLY what coach O said? "We needed some depth at receiver?" Why would he say that if they didn't need some help at receiver? It isn't a secret that the team has big question marks at WR...or are you one of those who stick their fingers in their ears, and think every year every position on the LSU team is perfect, solid and the best of the best and "don't-say-anything-not-hosanna-naaaaa-naaaa-I-can't-hear-you" ...like so many of your comical brethren?

Quit being so defensive, sensitive, and reactive. Just quit being 'ive.

It was so predictable that it could have been sunrise. I do a little research and post just some hard facts about the opening opponent for LSU, no opinions, no predictions. Then, a bunch of typical fans slobber and rant and accuse of being an meanie anti-LSU troll. Apparently even posting unvarnished straight facts about an opponent is evidence of trolling LSU. God help anyone who thoughtfully opines that maybe, just maybe, Wisconsin could actually win the opener.

Give LSU the off season championship right now... no one can catch them down the delusion stretch.

What O said in the press conference was that LSU was flush with dbs and Delpit and especially Todd Harris have excelled beyond expectations. He did say the need was greater at WR than DB, but that is not nearly the same as saying the WR corps sucks.

OK boys... let me ask all of you... how would you rate last year's receiving corps on performance?

Based on last year's performance and the personnel available last year compared to this year, what would be a realistic first thought about this year's receiving corps?

Really poor analysis.

Stevens was in a safety battle at a deep position, 4 guys have emerged there so he's being moved to his other elite position, WR which he's also played a lot, including at the under armor all american game week. We aren't as deep at WR and there's a lot of open competition after DJ Chark, but also, plenty of talent there including but not limited to Drake Davis, Stephen Sullivan & Dee Anderson who were all highly rated and now sophomores.

I actually liked your BYU oline post. Good info. And for what is it worth, while I think we win the BYU game, I know it will be a battle.

As to moving Stevens to WR, I believe it is just a matter of getting the best players on the field. If the LSU coaches think the team is better overall with Delpit/Harris at safety + Stevens at slot vs Stevens at safety and whoever else wins the slot spot in practice, I can see it. Stevens was elite at both positions.

It's a mix of 2-5. He was really good at safety in the spring, just not as good as fellow freshman Grant Delpit. But he's such an incredible athlete that you have to find a way to get him on the field. He played wideout at the Under Armour All American game and a ton of analysts and scouts in attendance felt he had first round potential at either WR or safety. Jacoby dominated some of the best DBs in the country during the week of practice leading up to the game. Then this summer he played a ton of receiver in 7on7 workouts and according to what I've heard, only DJ Chark was able to beat our defensive backs with such consitency. Depth at the wideout position is a major concern going into this season for sure. DJ Chark is one of the best in the SEC, but beyond that we don't have any real proven depth. So like I said it's a mix of 2-5. We have great depth at safety, he's an elite athlete, he's performed exceptionally well at wideout before, and our depth at wideout is shaky.

I'll make this simple for you. Instead of having Stevens compete with six other players, including two seniors, for one of two spots Orgeron is putting him in a spot to compete with eight other players, with only one upperclassmen, for one of four spots.

Now a question for you. Since LSU being unproven at WR means they "suck" to you, what does that say about Alabama who only have one proven WR? They are obviously slightly above "suck", right?

Danny Etling A different QB

He has a stronger arm, he is faster, and they said he couldn't feel his leg last year.
