By the book the play was an illegal hit.

This.

In fact, I've seen less called.

eat an aids infested dick. It's nearly impossible to make that block without the helmet hitting first unless you fricking squat before you launch. he clearly LEAD with his shoulder, however leaning to the side tends to put ones head in front of everything else. It's called anatomy and geometry.

Keep your extra fricking chromosomes to your damn self

Auburn has had people kicked out for a lot less, so much so that I thought this one was an easy call when I saw it.

At best, it is a questionable rule. However, based on the rule, it was called correctly.

I did not see anywhere if Coach Saban made any comments about it...

I'd hate to see someone with this temper be a fan of anyone besides Bama. Good thing his team is awesome.

It was a great shot, but by rule, it was targeting.

I was still like - "Whoooooooooooo" when I saw it happen though.

The outrage to me comes from the fact that not a single ref saw it on the field. Gary starts his "outrage" from the booth, and automatically, Al Ford, a known Barner from this region, stops the play and instigates the call from the booth. The player turned back into Brown, and lowers his helmet as well. It was a crap call by a crap official who should not have been calling the game at all, given his allegiance to one of the two competing schools.

That was a very bad call. He didn't launch with his head. There might have been incidental contact of the helmets, but if that gets you ejected blockers and tacklers will start targeting the knees, which will cause significant long term damage.

Take a note from Jamal Adams. This is how you do it.

You can be mad at the rule, but you can't be mad at the ejection. Sorry.

No im sorry that can't be correct I've been told by countless fans that cut blocks are chicken shite

I will say it was pretty obvious it wasn't an intentional spear to the head...he was clearly leading with the shoulder in a fast moving play....but made helmet to helmet contact

This is all true, but I think the main problem with the call is the fact that the guy being blocked was actively involved in the play at the time. I'm not sure how he could possibly be a "defenseless player" while actively involved in the play, and being a "defenseless player" is a prerequisite for targeting to be called in this instance.

I think it's a good rule and a good call and not just because it's against bama.

We are learning more about chronic traumatic encephalopathy which helps us understand the importance of preventing it. These guys are so young and have such a life ahead of them beyond college! Why put them at risk for being a vegetable at 50 or a suicide victim in their 30s?

its part of the very definition

quote:

Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):

A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A player on the ground.
A player obviously out of the play.
A player who receives a blind-side block.
A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first.
