Phil starts with "I used a combo of 24 different categories/stats from every National Title winner and contender from the last 22 years to come up with a list of just 15 teams that meet all of the criteria and in my opinion legitimately fit the national championship mode."
Then he goes on to make several exceptions, most notably the 2013 Auburn team in multiple categories .
I guess he believes we were just lucky. But seriously why change the criteria, answer: he was not getting the results he wanted.
ETA: From his Article: (Auburn 2012 D allowed 421 ypg but was excluded like many of their other categories)
This was how he eliminating Auburn.

Every time Iowa is expected to have a good year, they always underachieve. Every time they are expected to stink, they have a good year

Agree, anyone would have to dig for reasons not to include Auburn in a list of 15 - even if using the west is just too brutal. That would also eliminate the three included.

Here is his methodology LINK
Apparently his 2014 National Championship contender list is based on 1 good and 1 decent year back-to-back sometime over the past 22 years. None of it has to do with how a team did last year.
And even that's wrong. From a post I made on another board.
Phil Steele: "My first category was to look at wins and losses the previous season and each team that contended for and/or won a national title in the last 22 years at minimum lost five games or less the previous seasons...This eliminated 66 teams right out of the gate and here are the 60 teams that met this first general category."
Right off the bat, OM was in this first 60. When did Ole Miss contend for a National Championship? 2003, when they finished at best #13? Maybe, but they lost 6 games the year before in 2002.
So not only were they not really contending for an NC and shouldn't be in that first list, they should be dq'd based on the next eliminator which is not losing more than 5 the year before.
Yeah, State shouldn't be on the list either. However, our 1999 team, which finished as high as #12, lost 5 games the year before, including the SEC Championship Game.
So by HIS numbers-based criteria, State should have made that first cut and Ole Miss shouldn't.

Phil must be looking at the schedule for AU.

I think schedules are always a starting point when making a poll. Back when SI did a weekly top 20 (good old days, 20>25) Michigan or Ohio State were almost always at top early season, based on easy schedule.

Road games: MSU, OM, BAMA, UGA, KSU...I get it.

MSU after LSU, week off then
Oct. 25 SOUTH CAROLINA AUBURN
Nov. 1 at Ole Miss Oxford, MS
Nov. 8 TEXAS A&M AUBURN
Nov. 15 at Georgia Athens, GA
That's tough.

The fact Iowa is on the list should immediately discredit anything he says in this article. Funking Iowa. Seriously?

You idiot.
He is saying that no team has won the national championship when losing more than five games the previous season, which eliminates Mississippi State but not Ole Miss.

He is weighting the schedule pretty heavy. That is why Iowa is there and AU is not.

No, Auburn was eliminated from this year's "mold" because they allowed more than 409 yards per game in 2013.
quote:
Every National Championship contender for this year would have had to allow 409 ypg or less and this eliminated nine teams in Miami, Fl (426 ypg), Auburn (421 ypg), Duke (418 ypg), Missouri (417 ypg), Houston (416 ypg), Northern Illinois (415 ypg), Ball St (414 ypg), Arkansas St (413 ypg) and Boise St (413 ypg).

I like Phil Steele and actually bought his magazine Monday. I had an attack of uncontrollable laughter when I saw Bear U. on that list. Now, I know he uses some unorthodox formula to come up with this, but come on now, Ole Miss? National Title? I know I am a State fan, and I know we have no room to talk, but come on Phil. How much are the Bears paying you? How much? There is nothing, and I mean nothing, about that team that says national title contender. State doesn't either, and I know that. 8-4,9-3, or maybe, just maybe, 10-2, but national title contender? Heeeeeeeck No! I mean they have one halfway descent recruiting class, and they are now the shite. I've heard it all.

LOL at LSU fans talking shite about Iowa.
They would have beat y'all in the Outback Bowl without Jeremy Hill and I know all of you still remember the name Drew Tate

The next two categories dealt with offensive and defensive ypg. On offense the 1998 Virginia Tech Hokies (prior to Michael Vick) avg only 314 ypg prior to their National Title appearance the following season. This category eliminated no teams this year. On defense the 2010 Oklahoma St Cowboys allowed 409 ypg (Auburn 2012 D allowed 421 ypg but was excluded like many of their other categories).
