I think Dan Mullen has done a superb job At Miss St, but he has to be 2nd tier to Saban. Saban has turned Alabama into a Machine, while Mullen has turned Miss ST into a winning program

Turning Alabama into a machine wasn't that big of a stretch. They put all of their resources into doing just that. Turning State into a winning program takes a lot. Saban would not be able to turn State into a machine. He might could get them a national championship though.

There are only a handful of programs that could be turned into a machine. Bama obviously, Auburn probably, LSU, OSU, Texas could with the right personnel, same with A&M but it would take more than personnel at A&M, USC, Florida, Florida State and possibly Michigan. There may be a few others but those are the main ones that come to mind. Those schools have the resources and or in state talent to become that type of program.

Forgot one. Georgia has the in state talent to be one.

There is but one top tier of coaches in the sec as of now and then the there's a lot of really good assistants. Excellent coaches have been run out of this league by insane AD and fan bases. I'm talking generational coaches like Richt, Fulmer, and Miles. even the two quitters Meyer and Spurrier were really good coaches. Now we have a bunch of unknowns that have talent filled teams because of the geographical area we're all blessed to live in.

First, this is an excellent post. I have one little disagreement.

Fulmer may have been the best recruiter the SEC has ever seen, save Bear and Saban. He was an excellent offensive line coach and hired better than good defensive assistants.

His problem was not political. Rather, it was his stubbornness in not hiring a first-rate offensive coordinator to implement a spread.

When Cutliffe left, the writing was on the wall.

Also, I think the decision to bring in Charlie Weis as the OC was a bad move on his part, and not just because Weis was there only one season.
I though he was there two, anyway Charlie Tuna owes his whole career to Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

While successful at Auburn, his subsequent stops were underwhelming, at best.

Difference in Muschamp at Carolina and Florida is a QB. It seems that simple to me. He also didn't know how to balance a roster and failed to bring in skill talent. It seems like he has improved in those 2 things thus far at SCe.

Fulmer's problem was not political? Wow... I take it you don't remember Johnny Majors? The only reason Phil even had the job was because of politics. He lost it because he started losing recruiting battles against Georgia, and he never could equal the players he pulled out of Georgia that made up his 1999 team.

I think UF was a turning point in his demeanor. He has matured as a HC greatly. I still say if had just hired an up and coming OC, instead on trying to make s splash with Weiss, he'd still be st UF

I really want to see USCe do well because I absolutely hate Clemson. That being said, the jury will be out until they face a better team....just like LSU.

That being said I think he will have Spurrier type success at USC then gets snatched away to a bigger program.

Name a "bigger" program that would/could "snatch" him away.

Name one.

There is a big difference between would and could ... that's number 1.

Number 2, he's got a long ways to go before he's a proven world beater. SPURrier raised expectations here and we want championships.

Number 3, SC is perfectly capable of keeping him here and rewarding him for success. We're a member of the $120 million (revenue) club and one of the 12-15th richest programs in the country. Our facilities compare favorably with everyone.

Number 4, if he earns his keep and continues working hard and endearing himself to us ... he has already said this is his last stop. He wants to retire here. He loves it, loves the fans, loves the school, has said this place is perfect for him to build and leave his mark. His words, not mine. Most importantly, his family, wife and kids, love it here. They've made it their dream home in a very short time.

The only program he might, and I say might, leave for is his Alma mater UGA and most of us doubt he would ... because they chose Kirby over him and because Kirby and he are best friends. So he's not gonna follow Kirby for several reasons if you stop and think about what that might entail.

Isn't Muschamp the head coach in waiting at Texas?

Kaboom right there ... nailed it.

Three big things mUSChamp learned and really took to heart.

Recruit big time OLinemen and QBs and hire a big time OLine coach ... he accomplished that when he brought back Wolford this year.

He's a helluva recruiter. He's assembled a staff comprised of four former national recruiter of the year coaches.

Roper is a heckuva OC and QB coach. Really impressive resume.

He's his own recruiting coordinator and a tireless worker.

One important thing I've noticed is that the man is a details guy, he misses nothing in terms of operations and he is all business.
