I mean, I guess I'll just leave it to the greatest coaches in each school's history as to why this is a rivalry

"You never know what a football player is made of until he plays against Alabama." -- Former Tennessee Coach Robert Neyland

"The thing I particularly like about football games between the University of Alabama and Tennessee is the way the winner and loser react. The winner throws out his chest and goes on. The loser does not cry and make excuses. He just becomes more determined to win the next game" - Coach Paul Bryant

We certainly aren't ahead of Georgia in our head to head with them, but the Border Bash is usually a pretty good game.

The difference in the 2 scenarios though is that UT/Bama are top 2 rivals of each other, while even though UGA is a clear cut #2 for SC, SC is only UGA's 5th biggest rival at best.

They had to clear the field twice during the first matchup in 1901 between UT and Alabama, and that first game ultimately ended up in a tie because they couldn't get the fans off the field the second time. Apparently the fans were fighting over a controversial call.

What better way is there to begin a rivalry?

Indeed. Truly a great game until about 1974. For the last 40 yrs its had as much charm and drama as the Purdue-Illinois game.

And that's a great fact! Look I said in the OP I was basing it off of readily accessible info. Maybe a certain Vol poster can spend less time trolling fan bases about non-sports related topics on the Rant and update the TSIO Wikipedia page...

1975 - #6 Alabama vs #16 Tennessee
1979 - #1 Alabama vs #18 Tennessee
1982 - UR Tennessee beats #2 Alabama
1983 - UR Tennessee beats #13 Alabama
1985 - #15 Alabama vs #20 Tennessee
1987 - UR Alabama beats #8 Tennessee
1989 - #10 Alabama vs #6 Tennessee
1990 - UR Alabama beats #3 Tennessee
1991 - #14 Alabama vs #8 Tennessee
1992 - #4 Alabama vs #13 Tennessee
1995 - #11 Alabama vs #6 Tennessee
1996 - #7 Alabama vs #6 Tennessee
1999 - #10 Alabama vs #5 Tennessee
2002 - #19 Alabama vs #16 Tennessee
2005 - #5 Alabama vs #17 Tennessee

Since 1974 Alabama has 12 SECC and Tennessee has 5. That means Alabama or Tennessee has won the SEC roughly 40% of the years since 1974.

But yea, nothing going on since 1974

IDK...I think Mizzou has taken over the 2nd place spot behind Clemson just bc of their rampant arrogance at beating us when we fielded the worst team in a decade this past year. They forget the doink of the previous year or the arse cutting they got the first year we played. Georgia would be a solid 3 or 4...kinda close between y'all and Tennessee. We cannot beat them when we should...kinda like y'all with us.

Looking at the Wikipedia page, there's not much history there.

This is either a major flaw in Wikipedia or in your reading and data analysis comprehension.

I would suggest a course in College Football History. As of 1970, the Alabama-Tennessee series between the top 2 teams in the SEC was dead even. Granted, Bama has had the upper hand since then. But the entire series is characterized by long winning streaks going back and forth on both sides.

You might notice that Tennessee has played Bama about 20 more times than Auburn has. Why is this? Well, UT and Bama have had their disagreements, but they never stopped the series like Auburn and Bama did during the mid-1900s for about 30 years. As I understand it, they were fighting over the gate proceeds from a football game!
