I find myself in a predicament on these targeting calls. The hit yesterday in the OM/BAMA game was a perfect example. I want to protect the student athletes at all costs but it is much more complex as you know. Bottom line is that I would rather a kid be healthy than another big hit clip for the pregame montage.....but I also get sick when a player is ejected for a targeting call. Especially in the SEC..most of these guys worked their whole lives to be here and their pinnacle is running out there every Saturday. To be robbed of that is a damn shame.

There is probably no perfect solution. I know people smarter than me are working on this for our sport. It just remains a constant these past few seasons that bothers me.

So what changes (if any) would you propose regarding the targeting rules? Does the further enforcement and evolution of this rule help or hurt the game in your opinion?

Below is the official rules for "targeting".

RULES

Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet (Rule 9-1-3)

No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player (Rule 9-1-4)

No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 2-27-14)

Note: Beginning in 2013, ejection from the game is a part of the penalty for violation of both Rule 9-1-3 and Rule 9-1-4.

Targeting is stupid. Half of the hits in the NFL would result in ejections if they had these rules..

I have no problem with them making it a foul. But the whole automatic ejection thing is just a stupid grandstanding move by the NCAA.

It's not a rule issue. They can't enforce it uniformly, so we get seemingly random occurrences of flags while others go uncalled.

If it was called across the board, I think most of us would be fine with it. But when we see a receiver duck his head when a defender hits him and the defender gets ejected while a QB gets blasted in the chin and nothing gets called, it's just a clown show.

Its not grandstanding, it's a way of humiliating young kids, like rubbing a puppy's nose in their own crap. It's real sick.

I saw it ruin USAs football season last year when they ejected the defensive captain and best player when we hit a guy they ran into him. He was 6'4" and other player was 5'7" and even announcers said no way he could avoid it and was equally the other players fault. They were up like 24 points and collapsed and gave up like 30 points in 7 minutes. Until this happens to an elite program we are stuck with it

The entire purpose of the automatic ejection is so NCAA officials can say, "Harrumph harrumph, look how serious we are about the whole concussion issue! Harrumph harrumph."

It isn't going away. Football is going to change, or it will decline and die.

This isn't a 'oh noes, how do we get rid of it?' situation-- there's never not going to be this kind of a penalty. Its a 'how do we live with the new normal' situation.

If they can't help it or avoid it how does the rule and ejection help?

NCCA is complete joke

Nonsense. Defenseless player is the key. Maybe 5 plays a game involve the tackle of a "defenseless player".

I hate the targeting rule. Get rid of it. This is a violent sport. Deal with it.

It won't exist in 20 years. It's absolutely horrible for the athletes health.

I think a better compromise would be an ejection for 2 personal fouls (late hit, targeting, unnecessary roughness) of any sort then an automatic ejection

Ejection is bull shite. Throwing a should into someone's chest should not be a penalty. And Idk if they changed it yet but if they review it and determine it wasnt a penalty they should be able to take the flag away
