Yea, that's why they were standing around watching the ball sail into the endzone instead of getting into position to cover the inevitable run-back

They just had a field goal blocked,
Well than we shouldn't have attempted this one at all. Either anticipate the return and adjust accordingly or don't even attempt the kick.

Alabama players stood and watched the kick before fanning out. They should have been instructed better as to their role when Auburn had a kick off return specialist back and the kick was from the left side of the field.
Anticipating this turn of events, however, would have been a very remarkable thing to have done.

This is BS!
Saban said they practice unusually long FG attempts with a return man waiting for the short kick by having the kick team consisting of 4.9 to 5.3 40 guys fanning out. He is not to blame that they only fanned out to the left. Saban put this on the players and I ,for one, know he wouldn't place blame where it doesn't belong. They spend a lot of time practicing this unlikely scenario.

It's a tough decision, if you decide to go with different personnel on the fg, then you risk the chance of auburn blocking the kick and returning it for a TD, which at that point was probably much more of a concern. I think the only right move if you MUST attempt that fg is to put someone else in to hold like Clinton Dix. I'm not sure that would have made a difference, but Mandelle had a chance at him, just didn't make the play.

All we can do is learn from it.
So next year when attempting long FGs will you use safeties and LBs in your protect team?
