I think the fact the offensive line is doing so much better and the running game has been so dominant is the reason for the exact same players from a historically bad defense last year are actually becoming serviceable this year.

I've harped on it before, but this has been the key. USM will take a prized recruit every now and again, but most definitely MSU and Ole Miss' depth players always ended up at USM. Backup or even 3rd string at State or Ole Miss or possible starter at USM and go to a bowl game every year - more times than not, they would pick USM.
USM's demise has helped build the 2 deep at State and Ole Miss, and you see the results.
