Haven't done the box but I can't imagine TS being behind anybody during a game. Not crazy about the BS that you have to endure outside the stadium and hate going there because of it but INSIDE the stadium during the game. Best place in America.

The gas station was build long after LSU was moved to the south campus.

You're only partially correct. Construction of the present campus began in 1923. The first game in Tiger Stadium was in 1924. The nearby gas station called "Deaf Valley" was built between 1922-1924 and completed before the first game.

It got the name deaf valley because of the stadium being called Death Valley.

Completely false. Tiger Stadium was built to hold 12,000 people. Here is a panoramic photo of the very first game in Tiger Stadium against Tulane...

...a game LSU lost 13-0. There wasn't much to cheer about if you were a Tiger fan. So in no way whatsoever would it have earned the name "Deaf Valley" because it was loud.

There were actually several "Deaf Valley" gas stations around. I'm not sure of the origin of that name...possibly from "The Roaring Twenties"..., but I'm pretty sure in any case it had nothing to do with LSU in general and Tiger Stadium in specific.

It's a classic case of the chicken and the egg. In this case, the gas station came first.

Edit: In this photo, Tiger Stadium held 18,000 people (plus 3000 in temp bleachers on either end). Thanks to theantiquetiger for the photo and info.

There have to have been many student athletes killed in war. Did he get a Medal of Honor or something else to distinguish him over the others?

quote:

Lieutenant Box - a platoon leader - used a half-track to destroy enemy machine guns emplacements that were blocking the 1st Infantry’s advance. For his extraordinary heroism he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross - the second highest military decoration of the US Army.

The following year Alex was fighting German forces in Tunisia. In February 1943, Field Marshall Rommel launched an all-out attack against the American forces at Kasserine. Alex Box was involved in laying minefields and preparing road blocks, when, on February 19, a mine was accidently discharged. He was killed instantly, along with four other soldiers. He is buried at Plot I, Row 5, Grave 1 in the North African American Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia.

"The deeds and death of your son have gone to make up the spiritual background that is this country," wrote Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt - at the time second in command of the 1st Infantry Division - in a letter of condolence to Box's mother, Mattie Box. - See more at: https://www.baseballsgreatestsacrifice.com/biographies/box_alex.html#sthash.imc9gthr.dpuf

Y'all still stealing that shite from Clemson?

The penis envy from Florida fans toward LSU fans since ya'll got blasted over that pathetic arse "we are the real DBU" video has gotten laughable. I wouldn't expect the fans of what was such a strong program in the mid 2000's to be behaving like A&M and Arkansas fans these days

Alex Box Stadium, named after LSU student-athlete Alex Box, killed in WWII...

Always wondered what the name origin was in reference to. Very cool.

(Shout out to Iowa's football stadium for the same reason)
