I hate to pop your bubble but Harvard is vastly overrated. It is a status symbol full of hype.

Most moronic post in the thread.

Mississippi State and Missouri fans trashing Harvard on an SEC message board....

Keep believing what you want to believe. It makes you feel better about your pathetic self.

The Ivy is the Ivy not because it is fraudulent. The Ivy is the Ivy because outside of Stanford and MIT, it is the finest collection of the best schools and minds anywhere in the U.S.

Wait why is this in response to me? I never said Harvard was overrated, I simply said I think Williams is that awesome. it's currently ranked as the number one small college in America, and both it and Amherst offer at least a comparable education to the better Ivies.

Cobb, I like you, but you are way wrong about your take. Transylvania may sniff to the prestige of Centre, but Berea? Berea is more an arts and trades school. I don't think you see many students advancing their degrees in Ivy's, UVA, Duke, Vandy...etc like they do with a Centre degree. Second, the endowment for Centre is outrageous (just read an article. $315 million). They have a very wealthy and well connected alumni base.

Berea's endowment is over a billion dollars. It's free to anyone who qualifies as academically suitable and indigent. I'm pretty sure they don't even accept students from middle class or wealthy families. It's a very good school and I respect the hell out of anyone who went there.

Here's an article on their endowment: LINK

I think you've got a pretty good read on Transy though. Upshot: more awarded professors and location; downside: close, but not quite as prestigious as Centre.

Cobb, you are correct with Berea's endowment, mostly from church and donations. All students if qualify do not pay a dime to attend. Still, not as prestigious as Centre, but a damn good liberal arts school. LINK

Yeah Berea is pretty cool. I went to Prague with a couple of Berea guys (the school even pays for their study abroad) and they were super smart, motivated guys. I respect the hell out of anyone who is boot-strapping it through that school.

I think a lot of Berea's prestige is unfortunately lost because people think of the students as basically charity cases, as opposed to the more well heeled Centre and Transy kids.

Folks in their fields think highly of a Berea Degree, they have a bunch of grads that advance into PhD's. I know a bunch of grads, you are correct, very smart and damn good in their trade.

A Transy degree is a good one to have. But it seems Transylvania students advance to SEC/Big 10 schools (you have some that go to prestigious schools), but it seems all Centre grads get into the prestigious schools.

Meh,
a) depends on what you are studying.

b) There is nothing to back up any of these "lists" with any concrete, factually supported scientific, mathematical or substantiated data that says any one is the best. Like all "polls" it is based on a set of criteria that can change depending on who is doing the list and what they would like it to show.

Take Stanford for instance.
Number one or two computer science program every year in the country.
However, over the last 3 years the Stanford school of business has averaged a ranking of 14th and are behind, as an example the school of accounting, such notables as the university of Texas and Brigham Young University, again, according to the criteria laid out in US new and world report. It could differ with Forbes or another publication.
