"In fact, you are pushing the sport to a situation where a coach of a team in the top 3 will pull starters after a quarter or so to avoid injuries. Can you imagine the secondguessing that will go on if say, a Nick Saban plays AJ all game in the IB and he gets his knee wrecked in the 4th quarter? Or if Gus plays Nick Marshall and Robinson at LT in the SECCG and they get hurt?"

Lost me here

You don't foresee a time when a #1 or #2 ranked team heading into the last weekend of the season or CGs won't sit their starters knowing the tourney is already made? We'll be there sooner than you think and then "goodbye, dramatic upsets of traditional rivalries."

Would anyone have cared that AU ran back the FG attempt if AJ, CJ, CyKo, et al only played 2 series in the Iron Bowl?

Well, let's see. You are #1 and set to play the #8 team. You sit your starters and get beat. next week, you fall to #4 and now you play a much, MUCH better team. No. I don't foresee that happening. It gets worse if you are not #1 and get beat when sitting your starters. I would think your fan base would be even more upset for blowing a great seed.

Ah, I got ya. Yes, I think that definitely could be an issue. However, with a 4 or even a 6 team format, conceding a loss would be an excessively risky endeavor and something the committee would likely frown upon. In the case of a 6 team playoff, 1st round byes are at stake, so I definitely don't see it happening.

You brought up the example of this year's IB. I can't imagine either team conceding a defeat in the game by pulling starters early. The SECw title was on the line. Can't imagine Bama would be selected for the playoffs if they enter the post-season losing on purpose.

Now, if UGA had beaten AU and Bama had locked up the West prior to the IB, it may be a different story. However, it would be very risky for Bama to concede a defeat, because a victory in the SECCG is far from certain.

So no, I don't really foresee those types of concessions taking place in either a 4 or 6 team format, but I agree it's certainly a concern and an argument against further expansion beyond 6 teams.

ETA: DawgsLife also makes a good point about seeding which I didn't consider, but is certainly another argument against conceding wins.

The final four has six teams?

The list of teams that could reasonably be selected by the committee for this year's Final 4 is 6 teams long. I'm just saying that's a short list. Most years, there'll be about 8 teams on the list, so half the list will be disappointed - and a lot of those will be SEC schools. For example, this year, the committee could leave Alabama out.

I'm ok with this because the playoff being implemented next year will always double the number of teams who have a chance to win the national title, and it will force the eventual national champion to defeat 2 elite opponents rather than only 1, strengthening their claim as national champs.

The BCS is dead...and soon so will the only compelling regular season in college football. All these morons that want to NFL-ize or NBA-ize college football are just about to kill it.

You playoff expansionistas realize one of the greatest games in the 100+ years of college football - the 2013 "Got A Sec, Nick" Iron Bowl - would have meant nothing under an 8 team format. In fact, you are pushing the sport to a situation where a coach of a team in the top 3 will pull starters after a quarter or so to avoid injuries. Can you imagine the secondguessing that will go on if say, a Nick Saban plays AJ all game in the IB and he gets his knee wrecked in the 4th quarter? We are rapidly approaching the day when tradiotional games in the last week (OSU/Mich, Iron Bowl, FSU/UF, etc) or the conference championships have all the appeal of the slate of Week 16 & 17 NFL matchups.

But, by all means, let's get rid of the BCS. I mean, it only did it's job extremely well for a long time.

I'm in the minority that agrees 100% with you.

FIFY

Sure, we'll still have some suspense next year during the regular season as the presumed No. 4 and No. 5 bite their nails to see who makes it to the dance. Then in a few years, games like we saw Auburn and Alabama play will be for naught as we anxiously wait to see if Missouri or South Carolina get in. Then after that, we'll be on the edge of our seats while UCLA and Arizona State battle it out for that coveted No. 16 spot. All while watching the SEC Championship game as just a seeding exercise.

In season games will be interesting, but no real stakes on the line. The good teams will get in. The bad ones won't. And the ones on the bubble are bad enough to never have had a chance anyway.

Look at the mid teens in this latest AP. Do you think any of these has a chance to run the gauntlet against the top 8?

The seasons will be boring. The one big thing that helped college football stand out from the NFL, weekly games that mattered, will be gone. Goodbye college football. I loved you while you were with us.

I sure hope so. This is the only major sport without a playoff system, which IMO is unacceptable. There should be at least an 8 team playoff, including BCS or major conference winners and two "at large" participants.

The poll/popularity crap should have died off 20 years ago. In a way, the 2011 debacle is what's pushing the playoff system.

Edit: "Hey, let's give good ole Tom Osborne a MNC for his retirement". It should have ended right there.
