I think a lot of the AU hate is just Gus-hate, and that was happening from a segment of fans even when Gus was here. It was based on high school stuff and sour relationships. There's some additional group-think that goes along with that, but in general, I don't give a flying frick about Malzahn either way.

Long time lurker, first time poster: I can't and won't ever trust anyone that wears a visor i.e. Malzahn, Spurrier. Nothing personal against Gus, I just don't like visors.
