Then maybe the people she talked to were just Arkansas folk? My cousin that went to UVA(full ride), wanted to go in to vet, and chose Miami over A&M because she wanted to go in to marine shite. She never mentioned LSU. So there is another example of "national prominence".
At the end of the day, you probably couldn't go wrong with either. The only concern I would ever have with my children is that not stellar grades at a place like Arkansas are going to be very frowned upon. A 4.0 at most places is good enough for whatever you want, but when you get in the lower end tail, things like school prestige, and networking do make a difference. I would never hire someone with a 2.5 from Arkansas.

Actually, the current minimum LSU ACT score for admission is 22.
The minimum requirements only means that's the minimum score to be considered at all. Nobody's getting into A&M with a 21 in reality, unless you're family of Rick Perry or something.
A&M's average SAT score is 100 points higher than LSU, so these minimum requirements for consideration hardly prove LSU is harder to get in to.

What are you talking about? Vet School Rankings A&M's vet school is highly regarded...far more than UGA's and UF's. And UGA and UF have pretty good vet schools.
And as far as marine biology, UC Davis is top notch. UF has some unique opportunities too.

BTW she interned in Florida at a marine lab... that's where she talked to several "experts"
not many marine biology experts walking around the state of Arkansas. Not really our thing.

I don't really think it is our thing either. Other than the Galveston campus, but that isn't ever going to be our strength.

Texas usually gets well over 50k applications every year.

Couldn't find anything on 2012 but for 2011 the stats for LSU were:
14,818 Applied
11,789 Admitted
5,290 Enrolled
51% were Top 25% of their class
81% were Top 50% of their class
The greater point for A&M is if you go from 29k to 37k applications with the same size class it's going to get a lot harder to get in unless a lot of those apps are from kids that are too stupid to realize they have no chance to get in based on the published info.
I also don't like to rag on different schools per se. LSU and Arkansas are good schools with some great people and do many things well. Different schools are a fit for different types of people, regardless of academics. Facts are facts though.

Back to the "application" question, when I was admitted, I had a 1320 SAT and was just barely in the top ten % with a GPA of 95.4 (Honors and AP classes weren't as heavily weighted back then).
My first semester in college was fall '96, so that would probably be equivalent to a 2300 SAT and a 105 GPA today (counting inflation) :)

LSU had 16,000 applications in a state that is 1/6th the size.

these are really interesting stats aggressor. I know USNWR uses both the ratio of admits to applicants and enrolled to admits as part of their rating system. I think most of the other ranking systems do as well.
Also, while the extra exposure for us has been incredibly helpful obviously, the extra exposure for the SEC in Texas appears like it may be doing the same for many schools. My uncle is a teacher at one of the gifted and talented schools. He told me over Xmas that they usually have very few kids go to A&M or UTx simply because their top 10% generally go to Ivies and Rice and the like and many of the rest simply don't get in. So they end up going to out of state universities.
He told me that 3 universities have significantly increased among his students this fall - LSU, Bama, and Auburn. Apparently many of the kids that can't get into the Texas state schools are getting free rides to these due to high SAT/ACT etc. In the past, many of these kids went to OU or other out of state schools (he mentioned OU in particular). It's anecdotal but if it carries, that's a huge win for these schools as well because they are able to also increase their application base with top notch students.

I started college in the Fall of 1990 and Texas was right around 50k. We had about 40k. We have room to grow though. Texas has their 40 acres surrounded on all sides by Austin. We have over 5,200 acres. There's no telling how big we will get to be in decades to come. On the other hand, unless they start building sky scrapers, Texas has maxed out how many students they can have.

There are 6x more Universities to choose from in TX though.
