What I don't agree on is how pank somewhat and namely inelisha are undermining people who have opinions on col reb and the old south as ignorant hicks.

It's fine to like Col Reb

Col. Reb is my mascot. I grew up with him as my mascot. I'll pass Col. Reb on to my children.

I have an awesome Col. Reb painting hanging on my bedroom wall right now.

My problem isn't with Col. Reb.
My issue is with people who would turn their back on our University for a fricking silly arse sports mascot. Those people are ignorant and backwards. It's okay to dislike the administration's decision. It's not okay. It's like when Americans burned American flags when Bush was in office. Regardless of who is calling shots, and regardless of the shots they're calling, you won't do something that hurts your country if you really love it. The save Col. Reb folks are the flag burners.

I personally got extremely tired and frustrated having to explain how Col. Rebel WASN'T a racist symbol. But eventually I realized that what defines something as a racist symbol is when a fairly large group of people perceive it as one.(not referring to an ethnicity either)

To whom did you have to explain Colonel Reb was a racist symbol? I never in my life have been asked , much less explain anything of the sort to anyone.

There are plenty of black folks who see it as such.

That is indeed one way to view it.

Another way of viewing it is to conclude that by bending to their will, we are, in fact, agreeing with them and that what they believe is best for us...because they are superior and know better and we should concede to their obviously higher ways.

And yet, another way to view it is that you're letting people push you around. Not in the spirit of Ole Miss...or it wasn't until now.

You know what you're right and I support you for the most part, I got most of that from that lsu poster that started that col reb thread and you called him ignorant, I just thought that was uncalled for and somewhat "holier than thou"

Many people. I would say opposing fans but I don't really care that much about what they think. However, I DO care about what the parents of recruits say and I've had to explain(and still do fwiw) how Col. Rebel isn't a racist symbol.

But like I said earlier.....if enough people perceive it as a racist symbol then guess what......It's a racist symbol.

whether we like it or not.

Not to be nitpicky, but were the Flood from 1930-1935 (although the name never really caught on)
We have been the Rebels since 1936.

It would be fine with me if we went back to the Flood, FWIW.

You have to explain that to recruits' parents? I was just informed that Col Reb was gone seven years ago. Wasn't his outfit fashioned after a black guy that used to dress up for games in old southern attire?

I was mean to that guy. I'm frankly just tired of the controversy. It's frustrating that some people will never understand why Col. Reb had to be dropped. Maybe he didn't have to be dropped, but the things the Save Col. Reb folks are willing to do tells you all you need to know about your cohorts on that side of the argument. I love Ole Miss's history. I'm proud of the university grays. I'm proud of our football team.

Taking away the name Rebels completely changes the entire identity of our University. I want to be associated with our history in every way possible (the gray pants, defending the south Endzone, Dixie, FDWL, ect.)

I'm okay with dropping the things that we can use to push ourselves forward, though.

Col. Reb, the battle flag, TSWRA, ect.

Col. Reb, The confederate battle flag,

No. That's garbage.

If we change from the rebels, I'll be at the chancellor's house with a molotov.

Will not be happening anytime soon, though.

Unless Dan Jones is bold faced lying in this video

I hate to use this as an example because I don't want to seem like I'm trying to liken the two. Everyone looks at the Swastika and they think of Nazi's and the Jewish Oppression. What they DON'T think about is the thousands of years prior to that when it was used by multiple cultures as a symbol for peace, good luck, and strength.

I realize that this example doesn't exactly mirror the Col. Rebel debate but the fact that, what was origionally created as something harmless, it is currently perceived as something negative.

Yes. It died down for a few years but the questions started back with the talk of a new mascot. One example in particular was a recruits sister asked why we were searching for a new mascot and her dad said...and I quote.."Because Col. Rebel was racist."

I think about 99% of us completely agree with this. I do as well.
