I love Hula Hut, not traditional Tex-mex but great with a Mexican influence. Cool location also.

If you’re north of Austin, El Monumento is really good too. Great margs.

I second Matt’s El Rancho as a standard go-to spot

And Fonda San Miguel ain’t Tex Mex, it’s more upscale traditional Mexican, but also really good

Been here 10 years and never eaten at the Tex-mex places. There are a lot of good interior Mexican restaurants, however. I recommend El Naranjo, Fonda San Miguel then maybe La Condessa, ATX Cocina, Fresa’s or Licha’s. For tacos I like Valentina’s. Veracruz All Natural for breakfast tacos.

Haven't read the responses, but assume there's a bunch of Matt's El Rancho and Maudies. Good, well known Tex Mex, but if you want some gems try Habanero Cafe on Oltorf, Borrego De Oro on Congress and 71, or Casa Vallarta on Burleson.

And after, can walk down to Stag and shop for some cool clothes. Pro tip: if you ask, they will give you an ice cold Shiner to browse with.

The best answer you'll get. Nola chased off their food trucks 10 years ago.

Tried it was ok. I have no problems in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, hell even Beaumont abs Corpus Christi have great places. But not in Austin, maybe it’s considered cultural appropriation or something.

You are correct Austin Tex-Mex is shite.
Source: I’ve lived in all 4 of those cities you listed.
Edit: Not Beaumont but the other actual cities

This is the correct answer. Austin is California East now.

Some of the best I've found, believe it or not, are the counters in gas stations. The one across the street from my campus has a counter called 'Hot Taco' run by 2 ladies (teaching me Spanish ) and it's anything you want, fast...just absolute GOLD.

Going to suggest Fonda San Miguel as an alternative. It is great but not Tex Mex. Proudly claim Central Mexico
