I have never been accused of having a grown-up conversation before. I am usually all like "frick LSU" and stuff.

If Sumlin is overpaid, the Aggies can well afford it.

I have seen this before. Why is it something to be proud of? Like saying I bought that home for twice what it's worth, but I can afford it. Wtf does that mean except that you aren't very smart IMO.

You would think an Aubie fan would understand this.

You had Chizik who you were paying big money to and had a huge buyout. He won a NC for you just 2 years prior. Yet Aubie fired him without much thought and went after the best coach they could get and paid him. Now they will pay him more for winning. Why? Because Auburn is committed to winning and doing whatever they need to financially to make it happen. They may not be the richest school but they sure aren't poor.

A&M had a choice this offseason. Either pay Sumlin or watch him go. If he didn't go to USC he may well have gotten the Texans job. Regardless of whether he "deserved it" that is what the market dictated. A&M stepped up because we are committed to winning and Sumlin has A&M on the right path with his overall 2 year results and the recruiting he has significantly upgraded.

In reality Sumlin has 2 years to either win the SEC or show he is right on the cusp or else he is in big trouble. A&M will buyout his deal for $5 mill and get someone who can. It is amazing how many folks think that the '00s are the history of A&M football. On multiple occasions we have gone out and bought the best available coach in the country (Bear Bryant, Jackie Sherrill, Fran). Sometimes it worked out and sometimes it didn't. We haven't lost a coach since Bear that we didn't fire. We fired our All Time winningest coach (RC) in spite of never having a losing season.

It takes more than money to win but money matters and it matters quite a bit. Money buys coaches. Money buys facilities. Without big money its real damn hard to get it done. In the SEC you have at least 8 schools who have no fear of spending whatever it takes to win. It's the ultimate big boy league. A&M is just committed to doing whatever it takes at this point to get it done.

A&M learned a very hard lesson in the '90s and '00s that you can't just sit back and be conservative in your spending and expect to maintain excellence. Wally Groff was an AD that cared way too much about balancing the books. Bill Byrne cared way too much about winning in minor sports. Those days are over now and we are committed to putting our full resources into building an elite football program. When you raise 3/4rs of a Billion dollars in donations in 1 year it tends to make it plain just how valuable a winning football team can be to anyone that doubted it. The program isn't there yet but it will be.
