I think Jones will spend the most time on Simmons. Jones plays bigger than he is. Also expecting to stop Simmons is kind of unrealistic. I think Jones has the best chance of limiting him some in transition

That's what I had assumed, but I don't really know.

I think Hogg covers him some too. I think he's our x factor this game. If he steps up and plays more physical and knocks down a few 3s then I think we cruise (assuming everyone else plays about how they do).

I haven't seen LSU or Simmons play, so I don't know who is best suited to defend them. I do know that 6'7 can guard often guard 6'10. It depends on body type, arm length, quickness, agility. It's about a lot more than just height.

To be fair there might not be a college player who CAN defend him. I haven't seen it yet. When Simmons wants to and turns it on driving to the hoop he's too quick for any big to guard him and he's way too big for any guard to guard him. Guess that's what happens when you're 6'10 240 with point guard ball handling skills. That type of player just doesnt exist in college.

The key to slowing down Simmons is NOT guard him out at the perimeter, he's been too shy to take mid-range and 3 pointers all year, so there's really no reason to press out to the 3 point line and guard him from there, because he will just blow by whoever that is or overpower them if it's a smaller guard. You really absolutely have to just stay back and clog the lane and DONT foul. He's averaging 11 FTs a game in conference play and Victor is averaging 8 FTs a game in conference play. So just 2 of our bigs are averaging damn near 20 FTs a game. They get guys in foul trouble near every game.

Exactly. He's going to get his, I fully expect that. If he gets Jones in foul trouble and takes him out of the game is where it will really start to hurt us. I think we match up very well with the rest of the LSU squad

Holy crap, LSU is desperate. This is a guy who gets minimal minutes and LSU is acting like our best starter just got arrested.

7th most minutes, plays almost half of every game
6th in scoring, 7.6 pts/gm
4th in rebounds, 4.6 reb/gm

At a spot where you're now thin because you essentially have 2 big men out since the season started (Thomas and now this guy). Going up against the 2 of the best bigs in the SEC at creating fouls on opposing teams bigs:

vs. Arkansas
F Thompson - 5 fouls in 19 min
F Miles- 4 fouls in 8 min
C Kingsley - 3 fouls in 33 min

vs. Ole Miss
F Saiz - 4 fouls in 35 min
F Perez - 4 fouls in 30 min
F Gielo - 3 fouls in 19 min
F Hymon - 3 fouls in 7 min

@ UF
F Robinson - 4 fouls in 18 minutes
C Egbunu - 4 fouls in 26 minutes
F Leon - 4 fouls in 25 minutes
F Finney-Smith - 3 fouls in 22 minutes

vs. UK
F Poythress - 5 fouls in 26 minutes
F Lee - 5 fouls in 5 minutes
F Humpries - 3 fouls in 7 minutes

@ Vandy
F Roberson - 5 fouls in 21 minutes
C jones - 4 fouls in 32 minutes

His #s are a little screwed because he played more when Jones was out.

In conference play he's playing 16MP, scoring 6.2 PPG, and pulling down 4 RPG.

But I agree we are going to need to use our fouls wisely vs LSU. One reason why I am glad we are the home team when Trocha is out. Hopefully we will get the normal home court advantage.

Question about Simmons: Does he typically give effort on defense?

I've only seen him once, during the Arkansas game recently. It seemed as if he could not careless about playing defense. Was that just one game or something common for him?

The Ark. game was probably a bit on an anomaly. I think he was sick that game and looked to be struggling just to give any effort. That said, he was still able to get 16/18.

A lot of what Simmons does looks effortless. He doesn't often get the highlight block or steal a lazy pass, but he's generally pretty savvy on defense. He doesn't bite on a lot of head-fakes and can affect shots with his size. He also has surprisingly quick hands and does a good job of effortlessly knocking the ball away from smaller players when they least expected (he's third in the SEC in steals). He did that at the end of the Ark. game when they had a chance for the go ahead bucket with less than a minute.

I think he probably gets the lazy rap sometimes because he will let guys get to the basket when he knows he's out of position rather than try to pick up a foul. Still, his defense is very underrated IMO

How many games do you think he'll get suspended for?

And he doesnt end up with the "Steal" normally. He knocks it away and someone else picks it up generally. He's really good at knocking the ball away if you let it hang in front of you for more than a split second.

Trocha is our 8th best player whose stats and minutes are deceptive because he played a ton early when Jones was suspended the first 5 games. He's been a true difference maker in all of about 3 games since then. And he isn't much of a post player as he plays like a 6'11" small forward.

If LSU beats us, it won't be because Trocha didn't play.

And is damn good at it. 50% from 3 is nothing to sniff at. He extends out the defense. Victor isn't used to guarding guys like that, he's a low post banger.

You're really hoping this affects the game outcome.

How many drinks did you buy him last night?

I have some bad news, he most likely won't be suspended for the LSU game. Our cops are pretty arrest happy when it comes to minorities. We've already had 1 player get arrested for a Dwi, whom requested a blood test that came back 0.0. I've heard Trocha requested the same.

And if you think cops are going to fudge the test to help our athletes...you didn't pay attention 2 summers ago.
