I was always told make sure you pay your debts. It just seem like the right thing to do. Good job for Bowden.

Hayes writes that when he was one day visiting Bowden’s house he found a black ledger filled with names of players who needed to be paid.

“Bowden told the assistant coach, ‘Pay off the players that were promised and never do it again,'” Hayes wrote.

This is really old news. Bowden himself said the exact same thing in an interview with the guy from the Opelika Auburn News.

He said he didn't know anything about it prior to the hire, but Takeo Spikes came to him on his first day and said "Coach, I just want to make sure you know I get paid on Wednesdays". Bowden says he didn't offer any new players money, and that the old ones were all gone by the time he left five years later.

That's racist!

Were there not any white players listed in the ledger ... I wonder.

I just found this ledger and it has Alabama football player names in it... Look the binding is even red.

I have another ledger, very similar with UGA player names and numbers.

If the story was true, why would Bowden have the ledger? Seems like the payer would have the ledger. Anyone can create a ledger.

Pretty sure Spikes played his whole career for Bowden... 95-96-97. He wasn't even a senior in high school when TB got the job.

He's 2 years younger than me and Dye was only there my freshman year, so you are correct.

If I was in Bowden's shoes I would make sure that man got his money every Wednesday.

My best friend played on the 92,93,94 and 95 teams.

Said he never got paid a dime. He is pissed about it now.

At the time he first disclosed this - like, back in '92 or something (geez but this is old) - he said he was strongly influenced by the admin at Auburn that it was normal procedure, and he had to follow along now that he was the new HC. He said he worked to clean up all of that stuff, but Auburn still got caught and played an undefeated season without any chance of playing for any title.....
