It's almost like playing against 3rd and 4th stringers has an impact...

The best passing D starts up front not at the rear.

Did our D line let Vandys receivers run right by our DBs every play? Barnett and Vereen were both playing, I wouldn't attribute the awful secondary play to a bad pass rush.

Sure is. I mean damn it's so obvious. I'll be sure to namecheck you in my next presser. Nah, on second thought I won't you're too unoriginal even for my cliche loving arse.

The entire defense failed just as it had failed in the prior two games. Vandy could've been any team -- who we played mattered not. Go and look at what they were giving up the past three or so games - EVERY GAME. Defense far more than offense has to work as a unit in order to function. You have no DTs, bad LBs, beat up safetys, and one good corner who is coming off of injury and they played like it.

Yes, they played terribly because they were poorly coached. There have been a lot of terrible defenses in the SEC, including a recent VOLS defense. I would be willing to wager that there are only a select few who gave up 2k yards in 3 games. Injuries are an excuse only up to a certain point, blaming the entire defenses struggles on injuries and not holding coaches responsible is lazy and irresponsible IMO. Even after we lost Sutton, JRM, and Kirkland to injury there was no adjustments from Shoop to better fit the personnel available to him. How many times does it take seeing Gaulden whiffing on a corner blitz and us getting burnt as a result for him to make an adjustment?

Shoop may have a solid track record, but he had a horrendous season and a lot of the poor displays the 2nd half of the season fall on him.

Shoop isn't a bad coach. However, you can't install a new D and then lose all your starters, all your DTs, and backups and expect to do well. I mean for frick's sake we were forced to put DEs in as DTs and gave up shite ton of weight because we lost all our DTs to injury. The people who need fingers pointed at them are Martinez (dbs haven't improved since the work he did in his first season) and even Thig but not Shoop who called some brilliant games when we still had defenders.

No, you can't install a new defense when you're constantly plugging in new pieces. That didn't stop him from trying to throughout the season, and not tinkering his D to help out his players who were obviously struggling to understand it.

Blame Martinez all you want, he's a terrible coach. Bob Shoop is still a DB coach by trade. Shoop is still at practice every day. He still watches film after every game. How long is it going to take before he intervenes and at least attempts to coach up his players in the defensive backfield? The DBs were still not turning their heads and were getting caught flat footed against Vanderbilt. 12 games into the season and they are making the exact same mistakes individually as they were in week 1. There was no noticeable growth or progression from any DB. If anything, there was regression from Mosley, Gaulden, and TK.

We had no DTs left by the time we made it to the Kentucky game. How many times did you see us leave the Nickel and actually try to stack the box? We almost never did. Mizzou ran the same dive play over and over again and we made 0 adjustments to it. Even after half there was no change in the defensive scheme, we were just bailed out by a few very good individual plays and overall very inefficient offense from Locke and his receivers.

That was obvious by looking at his stats at PSU. It's a mystery that he got hired. Of course, it was Butch Jones that hired him, so maybe not that mysterious.

No mystery. Shoop actually stated outright before the game this year that he was hired to beat Florida. Mission Accomplished.
