Ranked 88th in the Country. I thought they would be much better than that at this point in Butch's tenure.

Shoop is a very good DC but anyone is going to have trouble stopping Alabama or Texas A&M very much especially when you factor in the injuries.
That said dating back to his days at Vanderbilt Shoop's teams always had huge problems with spread teams that had even decently mobile QBs, that James Franklin led Mizzou offense in 2013 was a miserable game to watch & his defense's had similar problems at times at Penn State.
That ranking will improve over the 2nd half of the season with what's left on the schedule but I think Kentucky & Carolina could give the Vols some fits, depending on who is playing QB. I don't see Mizzou or Vandy giving the Vols much trouble on D.

They looked like they were playing touch football regardless who was on the field.
