Pickett's a transfer who has some PT from when he was at Maryland (I think it was Maryland). He's been on campus for a while and we'd hoped to be able to use him last year. However, NCAA didn't clear him to play last year (they were hoping for a hardship waiver but no luck). It's been speculated that he may be used as a 3rd down back and/or change of pace guy.

We'll see. Recruiting is only part of the equation. Development is more important. Butch seems very "all hat, no cattle" to me.

I think he's trying to say that Butch can recruit but can't actually coach/develope
Of course there's no evidence of that so he's just spewing bullshite

^Last year Cam Sutton and Marquez North were showing crazy good development as true froshies. Hell even that true frosh walk-on (dammit I know his name but it escapes me right now) who was an absolute beast on special teams and had pick-six against Florida at the Swamp was also showing amazingly good development. Lot's of other froshies and others who'd been non-factors until Jones and Co. arrived improved dramatically, even Senior RB Neal improved dramatically.

That's him. And thank you - it drives me crazy when my mind blanks on something I know. Devaun is even more amazing than your typical walk-on considering he was one who was brought along when they made a late (believe it was post-signing day) walk-on offer to his high school buddy - both E. TN kids. IIRC, Swafford wasn't even supposed to join the team until this season but before last season began he worked his tail off in camp and they switched him from gray shirt to walk-on before the season started.
ETA: Didn't he also get the TD after recovering the blocked kick/punt during the UGA game?

Butch failed at adapting a system to match the experience he had on last years roster... It remains to be seen if he can develop his own young talent to match his system.
It's all on ferguson IMO. If he's a bust, butch will be gone after three years.

Malik Foreman was his HS teammate. He's not a walk-on. He was committed to Vandy originally, but Butch offered him soon after he was hired. Likely starter opposite Cam this year.

So super-late offer to Malik then a gray shirt offer that soon got changed to walk-on status for Devaun, right? I remember the local articles on those two - Swafford was so happy and already had a plan to work on his footwork when he thought he was just going to be a gray.
Of course, Dooley didn't bother recruiting in-state and even ignored some of our traditional out-of-state recruiting grounds. Malik and Devaun's school has churned out several NFL DBs but apparently Dooley didn't think much of the school and its program - guess he bought into the "Tennessee has no in-state talent and E. TN has less than none" argument.
Soooo glad that man is gone.

No matter what happens with Butch from here on out I have zero doubt that he is better than Dooley.........not that it's hard to be

Dooley def. set the bar low enough for damn near anyone to be better than him but Jones is light years ahead on all fronts. Those two are also complete opposites in every noticeable category.
Butch Jones reminded me of Bruce Pearl when he first arrived and still does. He's the guy we needed given everything that's happened to our program. The energy he's brought, the discipline and effort you could see being brought out of some of Dooley's notoriously lazy players, the way he's reignited the joy/excitement in a fanbase that still suffers the effects of "battered fan syndrome" and so much more is amazing. He may never win a title but he's without a doubt the right man right now and neither Kiffin nor Dooley were ever that.
I still have no idea how Hart managed to stumble onto Jones.

Bruce Pearl walked in and instantly made UT a winner, Butch is staring back to back losing seasons square in the face...not sure how they are comparable

You ever watch Seattle play D? A LEO is a linebacker in a 4-3 defense who is sometimes used as a kind of extra lineman who rushes the edge. It enables 4-3 defenses to become more hybrid in nature and add in some 3-4 concepts.
Good explanation here:

What made Bruce Pearl, Bruce Pearl wasn't the winning. I don't expect outsiders to understand that but it's true. FWIW there are no instant fixes in football (basketball it can happen if the talent is there but football is more complicated and before you cite Aubie - they weren't bereft of talent nor was the coach new). Furthermore the talent was there for Pearl to win without waiting for new talent.
At any rate, trust me, Jones and Pearl are most certainly comparable in many, many, many ways.
