Phat Phil was 152-52 while at Tennessee.

What were you guys thinking?

I know Vols&Shaft is going to come in here and want to castrate all of the administrators at Tennessee. So we will mark his opinion as already noted.

Phil should be AD and HC at Tennessee. The man is a legend

Surprised the poors have a winning record. Still irrelevant regardless, so I'm good.

Fire the guy who was in the process of cratering the program before he does any more damage?

Ut was 5-7 in fulmars final year of 2008. They should have fired him after he went 5-7 in 2005.

Firing the Phil Fulmer may or may not have been the right thing to do but the have hired the wrong coach every time since then

Fulmer would have had the same record at best if he were still the head coach. His tenure had become stale and every other SEC big 6 member had passed them by as relavant NC contenders and in recruiting. Richt stabilized UGA, Meyer was at UF, Bama had just hired Saban, LSU was stable, AU had just had a big run although they were about to fire Tubs. Like the Vol poster mentioned, Fulmer should have been done after 2005. AU did it right with Tubs, we could have given him a chance to recover but most likely would have wasted another 4 years.

The AD Hamilton was a facilities guy. He typified the old saying, "When they don't know what to do, they do what they know." He freaked out because he had spent and was planning to spend a bunch of money on Neyland Stadium - sky boxes, facade, parking, and also a thorough upgrade and improvement to all the Athletic Department facilities.

After the 2005 season attendance fell off, risking all the upgrade plans. The AD Mike Hamilton panicked and fired Coach Fulmer when the 2008 season looked to be going badly. It is really about that simple.

UT won the East in 2007, and was a couple of INT's by a drug addict QB away from beating eventual national champion LSU in the SECCG.

I always point out that Fulmer had signed Tadj Boyd. He was -still- willing to come to UT but Kiffin told him he wouldn't fit it. It has just been a cascade of crap ever since.

And let's not forget that Fulmer deserved to get fired but UT also deserved what they have produced since then.

That is way too intangible. It is an unknowable. Coach Fulmer did rely heavily on Coach Cutcliffe who left for Ole Miss at the start of 1999. He came back and they had one year together where the Vols won the East in 2007. Then Coach Cut left for Duke. Could Fulmer have found someone else to bring what Coach Cut did to the equation?

That is just unknowable. Things could hardly have gone worse.

Yeah. Fulmer had lost control of the team by the time he got canned. I distinctly remember UT players laughing on the sideline as Alabama was beating them in '08. His time had passed.

They can go on a 99-4 streak over the next 8 years and match it.

Well, Johnny Majors was fired only 3 weeks after beating LSU 20-0 in TIGER STADIUM! Y'all used to keep your coaches on ultra short leashes. Not UT seems to accept mediocrity. What gives down there in Knoxville?

Way too much whiskey for this man. He actually thought ut was good in 2007 and had no problem with multiple 5 win seasons?

I think Coach Fulmer deserved one more year. "Deserved to be fired," -- I don't expect someone like to you to understand such things but "deserved to get fired" is a function of having a better coach on tap. That person was not Lane Kiffin.

What sins lie upon the University of Tennessee - besides you being jealous - that cause it to deserve failure any more than any other university?

That wasn't true in 2007. Was it?
