Because they don't win enough to gain the support. If they do even average and gain some support, facility upgrades may come.
It's a viscous cycle, sure. But other programs have shown that it can be done once the wins start coming.

When is the last time LSU finished higher than 3rd in the west?
LSU fans have such an inflated opinion of their program. Ive got news for you. No One is scared of LSU

Y'all don't care about baseball. This hire isn't changing that. By y'all, I'm not even talking about just the fanbase. Your facilities suck compared to others in the conference, and it's because UT doesn't give a shite about baseball. It is what it is.

No... actually our attendance was down heavily during the Dooley years.

When was the last time 3rd in the west wasn't good enough to be the east champion?

Last year?
LSU was 5-3 and lost to 6-2 Florida at home.

Let's not pretend the West was some super division last year. The entire SEC is Alabama and everyone else right now. Zero separation between Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and LSU last year. I guess the west has a small advantage among the little 8.

This guy should have waited on a better job. Imo this is one of the worst jobs in the country.
Hope it works out but zero support from the fans/admin at Tennessee in a sport where all your competition treats it like a big time sport.
To be fair, didn't Currie announce like 30 something million to improve Baseball facilities?Basically saying they're investing in being good at baseball again

I think Tony can do a great job at Tenn. I don't think they'd be paying him what they are if they don't intend to make a commitment to baseball. He's a tireless recruiter. He's worked under three very successful head coaches. He's going to get players there. He's done that everywhere he's been and knows his strength is recruiting so he won't take himself off the trail like a lot of HCs do. He enjoys recruiting too much to do that.

Great hire Vols!!!
Won't lie. Really wanted him at Mizzou when we hired our new coach. Excellent recruiter and a good understanding of the game.

Elite recruiter that will hopefully keep the strong local talent home around Knox
You can expect him to hammer Missouri and Texas as well.

I've noticed the attendance figures for Tennessee baseball are pretty low. I believe I'm right in thinking that the students aren't big on attending Vol baseball games.
I'm guessing it's because there's no place in the outfield where students can gather to drink and BBQ....
...IMO students going to the games in significant numbers would really give a lift to a program that could use it.
Just my two cents.

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the new UT AD recently said they plan on committing between 15-20 million in upgrades to the current stadium. Obviously a very long way to go and not a long term solution, but I think it shows that he is committed to making changes.
Do you know roughly where his salary ranks amongst SEC HCs? I'm clueless with college baseball salaries, but hope that it is competitive and let's him know that the AD is behind him and committed to winning. Knoxville would absolutely support these guys if the team can give the fans a reason to come to the games. It's not an overnight process, but winning changes everything.
The more that I read about him the more I'm impressed with the new AD going out and getting him. You'd like to see HC experience on any resume, but he checks the boxes in every other category.

Problem is, that money is chump change in this conference in regards to baseball facilities.
IIRC, The Vols AD had a timeline for expansion in phases. You've finished phase 2, extending the stands down the LF sideline...
Phase 3 was/is supposed to look like this...
...extending the stands down the RF sideline to match the LF stands.
Then at some point you were going to add suites above the press box...
The problem is, all that wouldn't really move you up in regards to the other baseball stadiums in the conference. You'd still be slightly ahead of Vandy, and maybe move up above UGA's Foley Field. But that's it.
Truth is, there are better softball stadiums in the league right now than that yet-to-be realized expansion of Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Not being mean, just FYI as to where you stand in regards to other school's facilities.
Posted on 6/7/17 at 10:17 pm to TigersOfGeauxld
The biggest issue with Lindsey Nelson is that there is no more space left around the stadium to expand. It's been an issue for a long time and one that I'm not sure there's a great answer to.
Either way, there was a little more substance to my post than the paragraph that you picked out to shite on, but thanks for the take I didn't mean to make 15-20 million sound boisterous or that it would be the only amount cash spent on facility upgrades. Just that it was a start.

You took it the wrong way then. I was pointing out how far down the pecking order Vols baseball is in regards to facilities. That's all.
I've got nothing against either you or the Tennessee Vols. Far from it. My dad was a life-long fan of the Tennessee Vols. I'd like to see the Vols do well, except against LSU.

The Smokies are likely going to be moving back to downtown Knoxville here in the next few years (Randy Boyd who might be the next governor of TN bought the Smokies and is a VOLS alum. He just bought a lot downtown for $6M to build a new stadium. I'd like to see them share a stadium with the BaseVOLS.
