Tennessee fans will try to whitewash the Dooley years and claim they never liked him, but I disagree. It's clear for most of the 2012 season they loved him and knew he was the right man for the job. Let's recap that season:

Friday, August 31, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Optimistic

Tennessee convincingly beats a ranked NC State Wolfpack team expected to contend for the ACC title on a neutral field in the Georgia Dome. Tyler Bray hooks up with Cordarelle Patterson and Justin Hunter. The win vaulted Tennessee into the Top 25, and all was right in Knoxville. Tennessee fans were satisfied with the program at that point and were content with Dooley as head coach, knowing they were headed in the right direction after the big win.

September 8, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Rising

The next week, 87,000+ packed Neyland Stadium to watch Tennessee play Georgia State. "It's just Georgia State" you say, well obviously Tennessee fans thought otherwise if they packed the stadium full to watch this game. Justin Hunter set a record with 3 TD catches in the game, and the Vols moved to 2-0 and to #23 in the polls. Everything was going smoothly in Knoxville

Just look at how excited the fans are after Tennessee scored on a TD pass in this game. If Georgia State was a lousy pushover opponent, you really think the fans would be on their feet going crazy after the TD reception? Looking at the fan reactions, this was a huge game for Tennessee fans.

September 15, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Pinnacle

It was a big day for Tennessee Football. They were turning the corner. 2 big convincing wins over big teams to start the year. A top 25 ranking. A hot coach that had the program's spirits high. A ranked team coming off a road win at A&M. #18 Florida vs. #23 Tennessee. ESPN Gameday was on site. If anyone has a copy of this Gameday broadcast, I'm sure one could find a pro-Dooley sign in the crowd. Wait, I found one:

That is clearly a pro-Dooley sign up top.

Anyway, Tennessee was finally ending the streak, here.

A lot of hype for this game. 102,455 strong filled Neyland Stadium for this one. I am sure Dooley was cheered as he entered the stadium for this game. It started off great. Tennessee went into the locker room up 14-10 at halftime. Tennessee fans were feeling good about their program, and Dooley.

Tennessee extended its lead midway through the 3rd quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run. At this point, Dooley-mania was at its zenith. Just 20 minutes away from ending the 7 game skid, a 3-0 start and cementing Tennessee's flag back into the college football world, led by Dooley.

I mean look at how excited these Tennessee fans were after the TD to go up 20-13 was scored. You can tell by their faces how excited they are, and how glad they are they went with Dooley, how they knew it was the right choice all along, as he was the guy to lead Tennessee back to the promised land.

But then, the extra point was missed. One could only know that the missed extra point was not only a sign of things to come for the rest of the game, but for the rest of the season and Tennessee's program in general.

The wheels came off after that.

Capped off by the most iconic segment of the game after the Tennessee Train derailed, an errant pass to the Tennessee Savior himself:

After the game, Tennessee fans had to have been let down. All the hype for this game and the result they didn't want after blowing a 2nd half lead. Who to blame? Dooley or the players?

This Tennessee fan took to YouTube after the game to give his opinion. He blamed the players, not the coaches. Over 10,000 people viewed the video, so if you say that he was able to convince half of the viewers, you still had 5,000 people in Camp Dooley after this loss.

September 22, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Down, but not out

Anyway, the Vols were still 2-1 and still had a lot to play for. And they had the mighty Akron Zips, coming off a 1-11 season and big 66-6 win over Morgan State, travelling to Knoxville the following week. It was a huge game and the Vols had to get ready.

81,000+ strong Vol fans filled into Neyland Stadium for this big border clash.

Akron took a 23-20 lead late in the 2nd quarter on a 70 yard run by Quentin Hines.

It was clear there was a hangover from the Florida game, but let's give credit where credit is due and not blame Dooley just yet. This Akron team just won 66-6 over Morgan State the week before, lost 41-38 in a heartbreaker to Florida International, and fought hard in a 56-14 loss to Central Florida.

Tennessee reclaimed the lead in the 3rd quarter and didn't look back. Based on the fans excitement on this TD pic, they hadn't given up on the program yet. They were very very excited about scoring a TD on a team that hadn't beaten an FBS team in over 2 years, so the fans were still behind Dooley and the program.

Akron was able to pull within 30-26, but Tennessee was too much and won 46-27. Tennessee was now 3-1, and just came off a good bounceback win after the Florida letdown. The Dooley train was back in business.

September 29, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Rebounding Upwards

Tennessee had the momentum back in their favor going into the game the following week. They were going on the road to face #5 Georgia. A win in Athens would turn the season around and make up for the Florida loss.

Tennessee fought hard. They went into halftime tied at 30. They pulled within a touchdown at 51-44 midway through the 4th quarter. The Volunteers had the ball and were on the move late in the 4th quarter. They got the ball to the Georgia 27 yard line, but false started. That false start was a sign of things to come for the next play: A Tyler Bray fumble. #31 for Georgia celebrated after the Bulldogs came up with the ball.

It was another tough loss for the Vols. But hey, they went to the stadium of the #5 team in the land and fought to the very end. Nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe, afterall, there can still be some good things that can happen this season, right? No need to hop off the Dooley train yet.

October 13, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Understanding

Tennessee had 2 full weeks to prepare for its road trip to face the Grinders in Starkville. Mississippi State was off to a good start, beating Jackson State, Auburn, Troy, South Alabama, and Kentucky to start the year and were ranked #19. Lots of hype surrounded Mississippi State.

It was another hard fought game for Tennessee.

Tennessee was able to get within 34-31 with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. The game was in reach. But they could not stop Tyler Russell and Chad Bumphis on the following drive, allowing Mississippi State to run down the rest of the clock and score a touchdown to go up 41-31 with 9 seconds left.

So now Tennessee was sitting at 0-3 in the SEC. While they had their flashes, they had not been able to win any of these games despite having chances to win all 3. Dooley was keeping them in the games, they just couldn't finish. Maybe this wasn't the year for Tennessee, but Dooley is still the guy as he has them competing, just need to get over that hump. 2013 will be THE year for Dooley and Tennessee. For the rest of 2012 Tennessee just needs to compete and improve, and there is still plenty to play for. After all, the 3rd Saturday in October was coming up against #1 Alabama in Knoxville. A win over them would erase all the bad things that have happened so far.

October 20, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Souring but playing the long game

This was it. A home game against #1 Alabama. A chance to really turn things around and spark life into the program. The rivalray game that could make up for the close losses.

102,455 rowdy fans packed the stadium for a chance at redemption. This is a home game for Tennessee, no one comes into Knoxville and pushes the Vols around.

Does this look like the faces of Volunteer fans who have given up on Dooley and the program? No. They still had faith in him and believed he was the right guy.

Dooley had to coach from a barstool, but he was still the guy for this game and would give everything he had.

Tennessee was down only 13 at half, within striking distance. But Alabama was just too much, winning 44-13.

Tennessee was now 3-4, 0-4 in the SEC. Loss against Florida, loss against Georgia, loss against Alabama, the 3 teams on the schedule Tennessee fans want to beat the most. It's clear there wasn't anything left to play for but a bowl bid. But that is still good, need to finish strong for recruiting, after all 2013 is Dooley's year.

October 27, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Indifferent

Tennessee had a road date with #17 South Carolina. The Gamecocks started strong and got to #3 in the polls, but back to back losses to LSU and Florida put the brakes on the team. However, they were coming home to Williams-Brice to get back on track. With that being said, a road win against #17 would certainly inject some life into the Tennessee program.

Most people will just remember this game as the Lattimore Game:

South Carolina's star RB Marcus Lattimore went down with a gruseome injury. Could Tennessee take advantage of the distraction and steal the game? They pulled within 38-35 in the 4th quarter on a TD pass to Zach Rogers. Once again, Tennessee just needed a defensive stop. And they got it! The Vols intercepted Connor Shaw with 4:46 left and the ball. They got the ball all the way to the South Carolina 19 and were driving. The Gamecocks couldn't stop the Vols. And then:

Jadaeveon Clowney sacked Tyler Bray, forced a fumble and saved the day. Once again, the Vols come so close, but just couldn't get over that hump.

November 3, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Questioning

At this point Tennessee fans were beginning to question Dooley. Is he the man for the job? Let's worry about that leter - we have a date with a strong Troy team at home and then the 3 worst SEC East teams in a row. We can still win the last 4, our bowl game, and go into 2013 with a lot of momentum.

Tennessee fans still showed up for the pre-game walk. Would a fanbase who has given up on the coach still do that? No way! It's clear they still had faith in Dooley at this point on November 3.

After Tennessee scored a TD to go up 28-23, look at how excited the fans were. Look at how pumped that kid is that Tennessee just took the lead against Troy. Does this look like a fanbase that has given up on the coach yet, or the team? No, these fans look damn excited. You say "It's just Troy!" but these fans are optimistic and understand how important this game is for the program in the long term.

Troy took a 48-41 lead late in the 4th quarter. It was up to Tyler Bray and the Vol offense to win the game. They weren't going to let this close game slip away.

Tyler Bray tied the game at 48 with a TD pass to Justin Hunter. Again, does this look like the faces of a fanbase who has given up on Dooley?

Tennessee won the game on a TD run with a minute left. Look at how excited the fans were on the winning TD, again I fail to see how their facial expressions and body language shows that this fanbase had given up on Dooley:

A 55-48 hard fought come from behind win that was well needed. A quality win that showed Tennessee was still for real, still had a chance to turn things around for the season and finish strong. Plus, Tennessee set a school record for offense in this game, proof that Dooley had what it took. They just needed all the pieces.

November 10, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Back in Business

Tennessee was at 4-5, and still looking for that 1st SEC win, but with 3 weak SEC east teams to close, the Vols could have gone 7-5 and went to a mid tier bowl game on New Year's Day with momentum going into 2013. Not too shabby. Dooley was still their man.

Missouri was coming to town, a team struggling in its first SEC season. This was a great chance to nab that first SEC win of the year.

Tennessee got up 28-14 in the 3rd quarter and was well on their way.

But then the Tennessee offense went cold, and Missouri tied the game with 47 seconds left on a pass to DGB

Overtime! And it was the 4th overtime that I think Tennessee fans finally started to doubt Dooley. It was this point, when Dooley went for it on 4th and 3 instead of kicked the field goal. The pass fell incomplete, and Missouri simply kicked a game winning field goal to win 51-48 in 4 overtimes.

It was a major coaching gaffe for sure. And now that the Vols were 0-6 in the SEC, the excuses were done. I believe it was THIS point that Vol fans turned on Dooley. But they weren't done with him yet. They still bad bowl eligibilty to play for, and simply had to defeat Vanderbilt and Kentucky to go to a bowl. Dooley had one more chance.

November 17, 2012 - Dooley Love Meter by Vol Fans = Last Chance

BUT, Vol fans still believed in Dooley. A road game in Nasvhille. Vanderbilt was having a decent year, a 6-4 record and 4-3 in the SEC. But this was still a winnable game for Tennessee.

Look at this shot of the crowd for this game. Plenty of Orange, more Orange than Black/Gold. DOES THAT LOOK LIKE A FANBASE WHO HAS GIVEN UP ON THE TEAM? Do you think a fanbase would bother going to a road game if they still didn't believe in the coach?

The Vols were only down by 3 at half, but Vanderbilt opened it up in the 2nd half enroute to a 41-18 win.

Look at how happy Franklin is. Do you think he would be that happy if they beat a garbage team? Beating Tennessee still meant something, so Dooley hadn't quite put the team in the crapper yet.

But alas, Dooley was fired the next day. No bowl eligibilty and no SEC wins. Nothing left to play for. Perhaps a change was needed, but Tennessee fans stuck with Dooley all the way.

What a fricking waste of bandwidth.

Neyland Stadium didn't even have 90k fans in attendance for the Troy, Missouri or Kentucky games.

The majority of the fanbase beside the reds were full blown Grudenites after the Florida meltdown.

Fascinating history of the Dooley era...but I expected you at some point to weave the implementation of the 6-3-4 defensive scheme against LSU into your account.

Or was that a different year?

You know UT is Bama's worst, most hated rival and I honest to God wouldn't waste that much time or energy trying to poke fun at the shitty Dooley years.

Yeah, no shite because they are at the game. Of course they are going to root for the kids out there giving their all for Tennessee no matter how bad the coach is.

at writing 3000 words on this.

Most wanted him gone after 2011 UK loss

The whole 2012 season was a shite show that was made slightly bearable only by the WR fap threads leading up to it.

Literally only the sheepiest of the sheep were still on the bandwagon after the Florida loss. I openly rooted against the 2012 Vols.

Damn, a post from you I have to upvote.

The best part for me was when Dooley was hired and some Tenn fans actually tried to defend the move. The guy was a joke from day one.
