I mean, LSU should have been the AP national champion in 1936, if you just go by results. Only team in the regular season that didn't take a loss. Minnesota was voted #1, though, despite a 7-1 regular season. We obviously shouldn't claim that title, still.
Obviously, back then, teams in the south weren't given any credit, especially against northern teams from the Big Ten. Also, we didn't play any black guys, so maybe the voting was justified.

1939 Tennessee got shut out by the only good team they played. Their schedule was garbage.

I just meant in the early years of the AP poll in general.
But Minnesota had their first african american football player in 1904, so I'm assuming they had black guys on their team in the 1930s.

Yeah, that same guy was also the first black player in what is now the NFL.
They were way ahead of the curve. For the record, I think I read somewhere that Iowa and Minnesota played in like 1917, and Iowa had the only black player in the game.

It's the big 10. I bet the average big 10 game not involving OSU or Mich is still pretty steady at that average of about 1 black player per game.
