Alabama, Florida, Auburn, LSU, and maybe Georgia would have fired Fulmer after 2005. People act as if Tennessee made some rash decision, when Tennessee has the most conservative, change hating fan base of any top 15 program.

Dooley set us back way further than Kiffin. Kiffin's few good recruits are the only reason Tennessee didn't go 0-8 in conference play back to back.
Without Kiffin leaving in the middle of the night there would've been no Dooley. If Kiffy had done things the right way we'd be fine but he scorched us and we were stuck scrambling. We should've just appointed an interim coach rather than taking Dooley. We'd have been better off but it is what it is.

Agree with that.

Eh, kinda. I hate what had happened since then, but it had more to do with the hirings than the firing. He hadn't won an SEC championship in over a decade when he was fired #Richt
But hadn't he played for one like the year before?

Yes and it was goddamned motherfricking travesty we did what we did.
I'll tell you the truth of why we fired Fulmer: part of it is that people got bored with him. Spoiled and bored. We saw hot new offenses around the country and got tired of the same ole offense. We turned on our coach because of that boredom. We thought every year should be a BCS Championship.
However the real kill came in the form of some fans and alums who never accepted Fulmer because they worshiped Johnny 'the mean arse drunk' Majors and thought Fulmer was at fault for his firing and stabbed him in the back when Majors had to undergo heart surgery. However, the truth of what happened there was that despite that the players had went to the AD and told them straight up they would no longer play for Majors -- there was full scale revolt in progress and the AD knew it. It was well known around campus that Johnny was a mean motherfricker but he came across as funny and charming on his show. The irony is that Fulmer was known to tear into players who said a bad word about Johnny. He respected Johnny even though Johnny blamed him and stoked the flames against Fulmer constantly.
The Majors faction was much like the Paterno faction that cost PSU their coach except they kept it up for years. They were moneyed and yes, they were powerful and eventually they convinced enough moneyed alums that as soon as Fulmer slipped up firing Fulmer was a must and those alums and moneyed interests threatened the AD $$$ wise.
It's all moot now and I'm happy with Jones and think he's the man for the job, at least right now and I can say in all honesty that I never did like or feel that way about Dooley or Kiffin.
When I see the boredom/entitlement factor at play at LSU and UGA where fans aren't happy with a coach who just wins, I just shake my head and think 'take heed lest you make the same mistake.'

1. He should've been fired in '05.
2. Firing Fulmer wasn't the mistake. Kiffin bailing after 1 year and hiring Derek Dooley is what fricked everything up.

This. It's unbelievable how many idiots would fire those guys if they could.

Some of the Gator fans I talk to say the same thing about me wanting Muschamp fired

Not saying that I totally disagree here, but you Vols have worked this angle for the better part of 5 years with Richt and UGA. You're like the old, used up woman who was treated poorly by her man so she projects her problems onto everyone around her as a coping mechanism. Misery loves company. It's pathetic.

Uhm. . . Muschamp =/= Miles or Richt.
Thats exactly my point. He's the type of guy who should go. Not guys with SEC Championship rings averaging 10 plus wins a season.

I agree, just think it's funny.

Oh...ok. Didn't UT win the NC in 1998? Are some of you guys seventeen yrs old? Fulmer had stout teams back in 2000-2001...beat us in 2001 and it took a last minute pass/drop play for us to pull off a W in 2000.
UT suffers from lack of in state talent in high schools and recruiting has to be out of state, now while Fulmer may have been getting old...he had a ton of contacts in his back pocket when the Vols went traveling to Ga, Fl, SC, NC, etc etc

Not a Tenn fan but firing Fulmer was justified. He had a good run, but just like Mack Brown, the decline was obvious.

That's good to know. He's a good coach, and as an outsider who has always liked LSU, I gotta say beyond the winning he's just plain fun to have around. I don't understand the fans who bitch about him though.

His departures from the Taiders, Vols and SC should make any one wary.

2005: Total disaster. OC Randy Sanders fired.
I swear Randy Sanders was the cause of every problem in the state of Tennessee back in 2005. Everything was blamed on Randy Sanders.

Are they crazy? Muschamp isn't in the same league with any of them and while he did produce a good season in 2012 it wasn't exactly because he had the team firing on all cylinders. While naturally, I hope you keep him he's more reminiscent of a Derek Dooley style incompetent only Muschamp happened to luck into a 1 good season despite himself plus two shitty ones. He's definitely not a Fulmer, Miles, or Richt.
I can understand giving him one more year due to money issues (the buyout would be lower), the season before this one, and not wanting to get the reputation of firing a coach after 3 seasons since he had 1 good one before the team was ravished by injuries this year, but there's nothing that leads me to believe Muschamp is anything more than a good defensive coach who should still be a DC.
