I won't argue B/CS aesthetics (yes, its not a place I'd put on a "beautiful town" list), but I think this guy is getting into more of what to do there as well as town looks.
If you want to compare B/CS to Oxford or Starkville, well you're comparing two different areas. B/CS is a little over 200K, Starkville/Oxford is what... 50K combined between the two? There's plenty more to do, see, eat in B/CS in 2011 than there is either of the MS college towns.

If Starkville is so irrelevant, why does he feel the need to write a novel about it? The only thing I learned from this thread is that some guy named Steven Godfrey uses a thesaurus to compensate for a lack of substance in his writing.

I'm still trying to figure out what his point was. Oxford is better than Starkville? shite, I've never heard that one before. What I don't get is how people think it's sooooo much better. I agree it's better. But the differences are not very large.

It's not that he's saying that Starkville is "irrelevant," it's that he's pointing out just how pathetic, childish, and downright WRONG the whole "Mississippi's college town" bullshite is.
Face it, nothing State or Starkville has done to market itself over the past few years hasn't, in some form, been a way to compare yourself to Ole Miss or Oxford.
"Mississippi's College Town" is just another "This is OUR State," "Many Happy Returns," and so forth.
